Shreveport-Bossier Captains News Release

SHREVEPORT, La.---Osvaldo Rodriguez played the role of stopper Wednesday night at Fair Grounds Field, going eight solid innings in the Captains 3-2 win over Wichita and ending their season-long seven game losing streak. The Captains took the lead in the bottom of the seventh on Alex Cowart's two-out RBI single and would hold on for the win.

Rodriguez (4-4) ended a personal three-game losing streak, allowing just two runs on five hits while walking four and striking out seven in eight innings.

With the score tied at two in the last of the seventh, Cowart, lifted a single into right field, scoring Uriak Marquez with the go-ahed and eventually game-winning run.

The Wingnuts scored first off Rodriguez in the third inning, when centerfielder Brent Clevlen scored Mike Conroy from first on a two-out double. In the fourth, rookie rightfielder Peter Barrows hit his first professional home run. The solo shot with two out bounced off the top of the left field wall and then over the fence. Barrows wrapped up a terrific series in which he reached base safely in nine of 12 plate appearances.

The turning point in the game came in the top of the sixth when Rodriguez worked out of a second and third one out jam, to keep the deficit at two runs. After walking Clevlen and giving up a one-out double to first baseman Jorge Delgado, Rodriguez struck out Josh Workman and got Barrows to hit a comebacker to end the inning.

Shreveport-Bossier would tie the game in the sixth. Cowart led off the frame and was hit by a pitch from Wichita starter Ryan Hinson (7-5). Mike Provencher would double to put two in scoring position. With one out, Bryan Sabatella scored Cowart on a base hit. Provencher would come home on Palmer Karr Jr.'s ground out to tie it up.

Rodriguez threw another scoreless inning in the eighth, finishing strong by striking out third baseman Juan Richardson and Delgado. In the ninth, Mark Haynes (Sv, 2), gave up a leadoff single to designated hitter Josh Workman but then struck out Barrows and got catcher Edwin Belloring to hit into a game-ending 6-4-3 double play.

Wichita starter Hinson lasted six innings, allowing three runs on five hits. He walked no one and struck out five. Barrows' home run was his first in professional ball. Clevlen was 1-for-2 with a pair of walks. Mike Conroy went 1-for-2 with two walks, finishing the series with seven bases on balls. For the Captains, Sabatella went 2-for-4 with an RBI. He hit safely in all three games against Wichita. Shreveport-Bossier second baseman Uriak Marquez left the game in the top of the eighth inning with a left ankle injury.

The Captains ended their six-game homestand at 1-5. They now hold a record of 29-35 and trail St. Paul in the Wild Card race by nine games with 36 to play. Shreveport-Bossier is off Thursday but travel to Ft. Worth Friday to begin a three-game series with divisional rivals the Ft. Worth Cats.
