Wichita Wingnuts News Release
SHREVEPORT, LA- The Wichita Wingnuts lost 3-2 to the Shreveport-Bossier Captains at Fair Grounds Field on Wednesday night.
Wichita led 2-0 through five innings, but Shreveport rallied for two in the sixth and one in the seventh to avoid a three-game sweep at home.
With the Captains down 2-0, Alex Cowart was hit by a pitch leading off the bottom of the sixth and advanced to third on Mike Provencher's double down the left field line. After Robert Perry lined out to left field, Bryan Sabatella lined a single to left that cut the Wingnuts' lead to 2-1. Palmer Karr Jr. then tied the game with an RBI groundout to third base.
Uriak Marquez led off the seventh with a single down the right field line against Wingnuts' starter Ryan Hinson. Hinson was relieved by Jared Simon who retired Brian Peterson on a popout to first. Marquez stole second and moved to third on Bryan Frichter's groundball to second. Cowart then drove in the go-ahead run with a soft single to right field.
Captains' starter Osvaldo Rodriguez worked around a leadoff single in the top of the eighth from Josh Horn and kept the Wingnuts from tying the game. Rodriguez gave way to Mark Haynes in the top of the ninth, who pitched a scoreless inning to earn the save.
Rodriguez allowed two earned runs on five hits over eight innings for the win. Rodriguez struck out seven and walked four.
Wichita took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on a two-out, RBI double off the left-center field fence by Brent Clevlen. Peter Barrows extended his hitting streak to six games in a row with a solo home run with two outs in the fourth that made it 2-0 Wichita. It was Barrows' first professional home run.
Hinson pitched well and took a tough loss. Hinson allowed three earned runs on five hits in six-plus innings. Hinson walked one and struck out five.
The Wingnuts return home and open a seven-game homestand on Friday night when they host the El Paso Diablos at 7:05 p.m. Chad Sherman is expected to be on the mound for the Wingnuts.
