Former Big Sky Player Joins Stampede

January 3, 2003 - NBA G League (G League)
Idaho Stampede News Release

BOISE, ID (January 3, 2003) – The Idaho Stampede has announced that guard Ruben Nembhard was signed to the team today. The signing comes two days after guard Mike Smith was waived to create room on the roster.

Nembhard (6-foot-3, 205-pounds) is no stranger to head coach Rory White's style of play. He played under White last season with the Fargo-Moorhead Beez, where he was named to the All-CBA 1st Team after averaging 22.1 points, 5.1 rebounds, 6.6 assists and 2.4 steals per game. In three playoff games with the Beez, Nembhard posted 28.0 points per contest.

Prior to his award-winning season last year, Nembhard played three seasons (2000-02) in the Venezuelan Basketball League, where he was an All-Star all three years. In 2000, he was named to the League All-Defensive Team and was named the League MVP. He became a League Champion in 2001 with Gaiteros del Zulia.

Originally, Nembhard was drafted by the Yakima Sun Kings in the 5th round (65th overall) of the 1995 CBA Draft. He spent two seasons with Yakima while also making stops in the NBA with the Utah Jazz and Portland Trail Blazers between 1996-98.

The Big Sky Conference alum played his college basketball at Weber State University between 1993-95. He averaged 13.2 points per game during the 93-94 season and upped that to 20.3 points per contest during the 94-95 season. He also added 5.2 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game during his senior year.

The Stampede returns to action tonight, facing Nembhard's original team, when they travel to Yakima to battle the Sun Kings. Tip-off is set for 8:05 pm (Mountain Time).
