Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
FARGO - Three goals by the Fargo Force in the opening period was all that the home team needed on Friday night. The Force opened up the scoring and kept the pressure on defensively the rest of the night to outlast the Dubuque Fighting Saints 3-1 at Scheels Arena.
Ben Meyers, Grant Hebert and Jacob Schmidt-Svejstrup all scored within an eight-minute span to give Fargo the only offensive support they would need the rest of the night.
Meyers took a centering pass from Sammy Steele from below the goal line at 8:12 to start the scoring. Grant Hebert took advantage of a Dubuque giveaway in the high slot, and after being sent on his way by Meyers, scored to make it 2-0 at the 10:40 mark. Then, Schmidt-Svejstrup took advantage of a flatfooted Fighting Saints defense on a breakaway to give the home team the lead, and cap the scoring.
In need of a response, the Fighting Saints turned to alternate captain Quinn Preston. Following a shot attempt by Roman Kinal, Preston took a blocked shot and stuffed the puck through Strauss Mann to get the Fighting Saitns on the board at 3-1. However, Fargo's stingy defense led the way the rest of the way to shut it down.
The Saints were afforded three power play opportunities, including a crucial one in the second period which could have cut the lead to one, and another one in the third period, but were unable to tally on any. Fargo, likewise, went empty.
Cole Weaver rebounded from three goals allowed to stop the final 13 bids fired his way. Mann denied 25 of 26 shots on the night for his 16th win of the season.
The Fighting Saints return to action in Fargo to take on the Force on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Catch all of the action on Dubuque's Super Hits 106.1 FM, or on the USHL's streaming video provider, HockeyTV.
