Muskegon Lumberjacks News Release
MUSKEGON, MI- The Muskegon Lumberjacks only led once on Friday night, but the lead they would have, they made count.
Jachym Kondelik tied the game at one in the third and Mikael Hakkarainen lit the lamp with 11.9 seconds left in overtime, lifting Muskegon past the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders 2-1.
Hakkarainen's goal was an outstanding individual effort, slipping a check in the right corner and driving the net from there, eventually stuffing the puck past Cedar Rapids goalie Jiri Patera and giving Muskegon the 2-1 win.
Patera was magnificent in the loss, stopping 42 of Muskegon's 44 shots on goal.
Back and forth action in the first period finally yielded the first goal of the game. An excellent play in the neutral zone allowed the RoughRiders to get an odd-man rush. After the initial shot missed the net, Liam Walsh followed the puck behind the net and put it out front to Jordan Timmons, who made no mistake in going upstairs on Jacks netminder Keegan Karki to make it 1-0 for Cedar Rapids.
Karki made 23 stops, improving to 21-13-0 on the year.
After a scoreless second period, the Lumberjacks dominated the third period, getting pucks and bodies to the net and outworking the RoughRiders along the boards. Following on offensive zone faceoff Jacim Kondelik sent a hard shot from the top of the face-off dot that beat Jiri Patera five-hole to finally get Muskegon on the board.
Muskegon would outshoot Cedar Rapids 19-6 in the third period and overtime.
The goal marked Kondelik's 11th of the season and gave new life to the Jacks and the LC Walker Arena crowd of 1,961 throughout the period.
The win now puts Muskegon at 28-21-2 on the year as they continue to push for a first-round bye in the Eastern Conference.
The Lumberjacks and RoughRiders will meet again at LC Walker Arena on Saturday; faceoff is set for 7:15pm. In honor of St. Patrick's Day, the first 2,500 drinks (sodas or domestic beers) will be served in color-changing (green) cups and will be only $3 dollars!
Muskegon goals: Kondelik (11), Hakkarainen (14)
Muskegon assists: Vincent de Mey (10), Emilio Pettersen (27), Anthony Del Gaizo (25)
