PLYMOUTH, MI - The Madison Capitols fell to the Team USA, 6-4, at USA Hockey Arena on Friday night.
Madison (20-26-2-2) is ranked eighth in the Eastern Conference with 44 points. Team USA (34-12-0-1) leads the Eastern Conference with 69 points.
Center Jack Hughes picked up the go-ahead goal at 17:54 of the third period. Hughes grabbed the loose puck as Madison attempted to clear the zone. Hughes carried the puck down the right wing before snapping a wrist shot from the right face-off circle that flew into the back of the net to give Team USA a 5-4 lead.
Center Ludwig Stenlund scored a shorthanded goal at 7:46 of the first period to give the Capitols a 1-0 lead. Stenlund stole the puck at the blueline and skated in on goaltender Drew DeRidder all alone and sniped the puck into the top left corner of the net.
Hughes answered back with his 17th USHL goal, a shorthanded tally, at 15:12 of the opening frame. Hughes carried the puck through defenders and avoided getting his stick held up before wristing a shot past goaltender Joey Lamoreaux's glove for the goal.
Madison regained their lead at 10:01 of the second period with center Cade Borchardt's ninth goal of the season. Skating on the power play, defenseman Colin Felix blasted a shot from the center point. DeRidder made the initial save, but Borchardt was on the doorstep to jam in the rebound and give the Capitols a 2-1 lead.
Right wing Ryan O'Reilly gave Madison a 3-1 lead at 14:48 of the middle frame. Left wing Mick Messner carried the puck down the left wing and cut toward the net before trying to jam it through DeRidder. O'Reilly came in behind Messner and chipped the puck up and over the goaltender for his 18th tally of the season.
Team USA came back to within one goal with center Jake Wise's fifth goal of the season. Cycling the puck on the power play, Wise collects the puck in the left face-off circle before wristing a shot through traffic that found the open net as Lamoreaux was down on the ice after being run into. Wise's goal brought the score to 3-2 at 5:42 of the final frame.
Skating 4-on-4, Wise redirected a shot past Lamoreaux for his second goal of the stanza at 14:09 of the third period. Defenseman Spencer Stastney threw a shot on net from the right wing half-wall. Wise was on the right doorstep and got his stick on the puck to redirect the shot inside the right post to tie the game at 3-3.
Wise completed his natural hat trick with his seventh tally of the season at 16:25 of the final frame. Left wing Joel Farabee grabbed the puck on the left doorstep and fired a shot wide. The puck found its way over to Wise in the right face-off circle for the snap shot that beat Lamoreaux five-hole and gave Team USA a 4-3 lead.
The Capitols answered back at 17:33 of the third period with center Anthony Callin's 11th goal of the season. Borchardt carried the puck down the right wing and cut toward the net. Borchardt's attempt to stuff the puck in was halted by DeRidder. Callin came streaking into the slot to jam in the rebound and tie the game at 4-4.
Farabee netted an empty net goal at 19:12 to bring the final score to 6-4.
Lamoreaux (2-6-1-0) took his sixth loss of the season stopping 35-of-40 shots. DeRidder (13-0-0-0) earned his 13th win of the season stopping 23-of-27 shots.
Madison went 1-for-4 on the power play. Team USA was 1-for-3 with the man advantage.
Notables: The Capitols are on a three-game losing streak...Center Ludwig Stenlund has five goals and two assists in his last seven games...Stenlund is on a two-game goal scoring streak.
