Sioux Falls Stampede News Release
Urbandale, IA-Nolan Walker's goal just 1:18 into overtime lifted the Sioux Falls Stampede (28-14-8) to a big 3-2 victory over the Des Moines Buccaneers Friday night at Buccaneer Arena. The win was the Herd's 15th this year on the road and kept them in sole possession of third place in the Western Conference, one point ahead of fourth place Fargo and two points back of second place Waterloo with ten games left in the regular season.
Griffin Lunn and Kirill Panykov scored goals in regulation while Mikhail Berdin was outstanding once again in between the pipes, stopping 38 of 40 shots to earn his 20th win of the season. The Herd finished the season with a 4-0-2 mark against the Bucs with all but one game decided by just a goal. Sioux Falls is 12-3-2 in their last 17 games.
After a scoreless first period in which Des Moines outshot Sioux Falls 12-5, the Bucs grabbed the first goal of the game just 2:52 into the period on the power play. Michael Hardman took the puck in front of the Stampede net and found Nicolas Werbik who danced around Mikhail Berdin and backhanded the puck into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead. The Bucs dominated the rest of the period, outshooting the Herd 15-3. The Stampede had two power play chances in the period, but were unable to generate much offense and spent most of the period in the defensive zone, but trailed by just one goal entering the final period.
The game picked up in the third period. The Herd found themselves down two men for 1:44 early in the third period, but created their own offensive chances and eventually killed it off. That gave them momentum and they finally cashed in at 8:19 when Cameron Burke took the puck behind the Des Moines net and centered in the slot for Griffin Lunn who one-timed the puck into the back of the net to make it a 1-1 game. The Herd took the lead just 38 seconds later on a goal from Kirill Panykov. Off a face-off, Jack St. Ivany sent a shot towards the net that deflected off Panykov's leg and snuck past Bucs goaltender Roman Durny for a 2-1 lead. The Bucs would rally to tie the game though with 4:28 remaining in regulation when Matt Gosiewski took a pass in between the circles from Matthew Stanton and beat Berdin.
The game would eventually go to overtime, but it would take the Herd just 1:18 into the extra session to end it. Panykov tallied an assist for the sixth straight game when he backhanded a pass from the right wing boards into the slot for a streaking Nolan Walker who skated in and wristed a shot past the glove side of Durny to earn the win for the Herd. Walker has seven points over his last four games and leads the Stampede in scoring with 44 points.
Des Moines outshot Sioux Falls 41-21 on the night and went 1-for-3 on the power play while the Herd were 0-for-3.
The Herd travel to Sioux City on Saturday to face the Musketeers at 7:05 PM. Fans can catch the game live on KELO News Talk 1320-AM, 105.1-FM and KELO.com beginning at 6:40 PM with the Splash City pre-game show
