SERIES AT A GLANCE: The Flying Squirrels will look to snap their three-game losing streak when they take on the Bowie Baysox in the opener of a four-game series at Prince George's Stadium tonight. On Sunday afternoon, Ben Copeland went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored to lead Akron to a 3-2 victory over Richmond in the finale of a three-game series at Canal Park. Aeros starter T. J. McFarland (8-1) scattered 12 hits, but limited Richmond to just one run in seven innings pitched en route to picking up his Eastern League-leading eighth win of the season. Johnny Monell went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs and Craig Westcott (3-4) turned in a quality start for the Flying Squirrels, allowing three earned runs in six innings pitched. With the loss, Richmond matched its longest losing streak of the season (3 games) and was swept in a series for the first time in 2012. The Flying Squirrels went 9-16 against Bowie in 2011 including a 6-6 mark at The Diamond. Richmond is 31-33 all-time against Bowie and the club is 12-18 all-time at Prince George's Stadium. The two teams will meet 24 times in 2012, 10 times in Bowie and 14 times in Richmond. Richmond won two out of three games between the two clubs in Bowie April 9-11 and the two teams split a four-game series at The Diamond from April 30 through May 3. The Flying Squirrels won three out of four from the Baysox at The Diamond from May 10 through May 13. Following this four-game series, the two teams will meet again at Bowie's Prince George's Stadium for a three-game set July 23 through July 25.
TODAY'S PITCHERS: LHP Jason Stevenson vs. LHP Cole McCurry
Stevenson: Makes his ninth start of the season for the Flying Squirrels tonight. In his last start, Stevenson allowed seven hits and two runs, one of which was earned, along with one walk and five strikeouts and matched his season high of 7.0 innings pitched against Harrisburg Wednesday. He took the loss in Richmond's 3-1 setback. Tonight's game will be his second career start against Bowie. He is 0-0 with a 4.26 ERA against the Baysox. Stevenson, a former Montreal/Washington farmhand returned to baseball following a five-year hiatus for personal reasons that began after the 2005 season. The 30-year-old southpaw signed with the Chico (CA) Outlaws of the independent North American League in 2011 and posted an 8-0 mark with a 1.68 ERA in 9 appearances, including 8 starts and earned a spot in the NAL All-Star Game. After signing with the Giants, Stevenson went 1-0 with a 1.29 ERA in his lone start with Richmond as he allowed just one earned run in seven innings pitched at Altoona on Sept. 5. He also posted a 1-0 mark with a 5.56 ERA in two starts with Triple-A Fresno. Stevenson boasts a 35-42 record with a 4.65 ERA and three saves in 160 career minor league appearances, including 70 starts. He was originally selected by the Expos in the 12th round of the 2000 June Draft out of Sacramento City College. Stevenson resides in Redding, Calif.
McCurry: Makes his ninth start of the season tonight. In his last start, McCurry allowed six hits and three earned runs along with two walks and four strikeouts in 5.2 innings pitched against Altoona Wednesday. He received a no-decision in Bowie's 4-3 setback. He is currently second in the Eastern League in losses (6), behind teammate Bobby Bundy (7). The southpaw split the 2011 season between three different Baltimore affiliates, Advanced-A Frederick, Bowie and Triple-A Norfolk. In 37 combined appearances, all of which came in relief, McCurry compiled a 9-3 record with no saves and a 2.57 ERA. He split the 2010 campaign between Low-A Delmarva and Frederick and posted a combined 5-7 record with two saves and a 4.35 ERA in 31 appearances, including 13 starts. In 147 career minor league appearances, including 84 starts, McCurry owns a 38-39 record with two saves and a 3.63 ERA. Mc-Curry was originally selected by the Braves in the 31st round of the 2005 June Draft, but he did not sign. He was selected by the Oriole in the 43rd round of the 2007 June Draft out of Tennessee Wesleyan College.
ROAD WOES: The Flying Squirrels are 0-3 on their current road trip and will attempt to reverse a trend of losing away from the friendly confines of The Diamond. Richmond lost their first three road games of the season at New Britain (4/5-4/6) and went 3-4 on its opening road trip against New Britain and Bowie. The Flying Squirrels have lost five of their seven series away from The Diamond this season. Their lone road series victories came at Bowie (4/9-4/11) and at Harrisburg (5/7-5/9).Richmond is now 8-14 on the road in 2012. Last season, Richmond compiled a 32-39 (.451) mark away from The Diamond. In franchise history, the Flying Squirrels are 71-93 (.433) on the road.
HERE'S JOHNNY: Johnny Monell's three-hit game yesterday capped off a banner series at the plate for the Flying Squirrels catcher. In three games against Akron, Monell went 6-for-12 (.500 AVG) with a home run, a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Monell continues to swing the bat well in May. He is currently batting .302 (16-for-53) and he has hit three of his four home runs in May. Additionally, he has four doubles, nine RBIs and eight runs scored in 17 games since the calendar flipped to May.
MAGNIFICENT MADAY: Reliever Daryl Maday has now worked five straight scoreless outings (13.1 IP) for Richmond.
