New Britain Rock Cats News Release
NEW BRITAIN, CT - After an hour and 14 minute rain delay to start the night, the Rock Cats broke out the lumber for a 15-hit attack - led by Chris Herrmann's four-hit performance - and held off a late Binghamton comeback to escape with a 10-7 victory on Monday night.
Herrmann had three singles and a double on the night. He also scored three times to help set the pace for an offensive explosion.
The Rock Cats struck first with two runs in the first inning. Leadoff man Estarlin De Los Santos reached base safely after a throwing error by shortstop Sean Kazmar. Herrmann followed with a single to right that put De Los Santos on third. Herrmann advanced to second on the throw putting two runners in scoring position with no outs. Deibinson Romero then delivered a sacrifice fly to center to plate De Los Santos for the 1-0 lead. With two outs, Mark Cohoon unleashed a wild pitch that allowed Herrmann to cross the plate for the second run of the inning.
Steve Hirschfeld kept the B-Mets off the board until the fourth inning. Binghamton received three consecutive singles to load the bases before Juan Centeno's sacrifice fly to left knocked in Raul Reyes to cut the lead in half.
James Beresford added to the Rock Cats' lead with a two-out, two-run single in the fourth inning for a 4-1 advantage. In the fifth, the `Cats tacked on three more runs to blow open the game. Nate Hanson had an RBI sacrifice fly and Evan Bigley added a two-run single.
The B-Mets entered the top of the ninth down by eight but scored five runs - including a two-run homer by Reyes. Josh Rodriguez also had a two-run triple in the inning. Daniel Turpen was charged with six runs in two innings of work out of the bullpen but was able to hold on to the lead.
Hirschfeld (3-4) limited the B-Mets to one run on six hits through five innings.
Cohoon (2-5) finished with eight hits and seven runs - five earned - in 4 2/3 innings.
ALLSTATE PLAYER OF THE GAME: RHP Steve Hirschfeld limited the B-Mets to one run on five hits and struck out two in five innings.
