Flyers Assign Johnston to Solar Bears
October 16, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Orlando Solar Bears News Release
Orlando, FL - The Orlando Solar Bears, proud affiliate of the NHL's Minnesota Wild and Toronto Maple Leafs and AHL's Iowa Wild and Toronto Marlies, announced today that forward Andrew Johnston has been assigned to the Solar Bears by the Philadelphia Flyers (NHL) from the Adirondack Phantoms of the American Hockey League (AHL). Orlando has also traded D George Hughes to the Bakersfield Condors for future considerations and released F Michael Neal and F Marshall Everson.
"These are brutally difficult decisions to make," said Solar Bears Head Coach Vince Williams. "We have to balance the personnel we have in place and roster depth at each position with the ECHL roster and salary cap limits. We are looking forward to the start of the season and getting in front of the home crowd on Saturday night."
Johnston (6-1, 180 lbs.) completed his rookie campaign last season, splitting time with the Adirondack Phantoms (AHL) and Trenton Titans (ECHL). In 18 games with Trenton, Johnston picked up 11 points on three goals and eight assists. He had five points on two goals and three assists in 29 games with the Phantoms.
The native of Saskatoon, SK, played three seasons (2009-12) in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) prior to turning pro. Johnston skated in 175 SJHL games, scoring 78 goals and adding 112 assists for 190 points.
