Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (MAY 5, 2015) - A five run-fourth inning and six innings from right-hander Jonathan Martinez proved a winning recipe as the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, beat the Salem Red Sox 5-2 at TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark on Tuesday night. Martinez allowed five hits on just 60 pitches to pick up his first win of the season.

Right fielder Aneury Tavarez gave the Red Sox a quick lead with a solo home run in the second, his first of the year. The Pelicans (15-9) responded by taking advantage of a throwing error to begin the bottom of the fourth inning. Mark Zagunis led off the frame with a chopper to third base, but Jordan Betts threw low to first, allowing the Pelicans left fielder to reach. Designated hitter Ben Carhart followed with a walk before Billy McKinney stroked a two-run double down the right field line to give the Birds a 2-1 lead. Jacob Rogers followed with an RBI double down the left field line. In all, seven batters reached before Salem starter Teddy Stankiewicz could record an out. Of the Pelicans seven total hits on the night, each of the top seven hitters in the lineup had one apiece.

Jeimer Candelario then reached on an infield hit before Trey Martin singled sharply to left. Carlos Penalver capped the scoring when he drove in a run with a fielder's choice ground out, giving the Birds a 5-1 advantage.

The Red Sox (13-11) sent newly promoted reliever Aaron Wilkerson to relieve Stankiewicz. The right-handed pitched 3 1/3 innings and allowed only one hit. A Cumberland University graduate who went undrafted in 2011 and played two seasons of independent baseball, Wilkerson struck out six, including a stretch of four in-a-row.

Outside of a first inning single to Carhart, Stankiewicz had cruised through the first three frames, facing the minimum. Martinez retired seven of the first eight hitters he faced with fly ball outs.

Red Sox shortstop Tzu-Wei Lin homered in the sixth to score the second of two earned runs Martinez would allow, but the Pelicans bullpen shut out the visiting offense from there. Right-hander Ben Wells surrendered two hits and a walk over two innings. James Pugliese recorded his second save with a perfect ninth inning.

The win for Martinez (1-1, 2.35) was his first in four starts. Stankiewicz fell to 0-4.

The Birds will pick up the action with a doubleheader scheduled for Wednesday. The first pitch of game one at TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. ET. Right-hander Daury Torrez (2-1, 3.57) is scheduled to pitch for Myrtle Beach while the Red Sox will send righty Kevin McAvoy (2-1, 1.66) to the hill. Pelicans left-hander Gerardo Concepcion (0-2, 1.69) is slated to start game two of the twin bill, and Salem will go with right-hander Joe Gunkel (1-0, 1.23).

The doubleheader was scheduled when rain postponed the Pelicans/Red Sox series finale on April 15. It will be the continuation of this season's Strike Out Cancer Series with #DeflateCancer Night & Testicular Cancer Awareness Night, presented by American Cancer Society. The event will feature an inflatable baseball giveaway to the first 500 fans in attendance. It will also be Wiener Wednesday, presented by Hebrew National, where all hot dogs are priced two-for-one.

The games can be heard live, presented by Courtyard Myrtle Beach at Barefoot Landing, on 1450 WRNN-AM ESPN Myrtle Beach, on the TuneIn Radio App, and via the MiLB First Pitch App, beginning with the Pregame Show at 5:45 p.m. ET. The games will also air along with live streaming video on MiLB.tv (subscription required).

The 2015 season marks the 17th season for the Pelicans franchise and first as the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. For information on tickets to see the Pelicans in 2015, please call (843) 918-6000, e-mail info@myrtlebeachpelicans.com, or visit www.MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
