Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Dayton, OH - The Bowling Green Hot Rods (36-29) claimed a three-game sweep of the Dayton Dragons (26-40) with a 7-3 win in the series finale at Fifth Third Field on Thursday. RHP Dylan Floro gave the Hot Rods his fourth quality start of the season on six solid innings of pitching while every Hot Rods batter collected at least one hit. The victory was also the 200th win the managerial career of Jared Sandberg.
The Dragons got on the board first before the Hot Rods quickly responded. Daniel Pigott hit a lead-off double for the Dragons in the first inning and advanced to third base after a Beau Amaral single. With runners at the corners, Amaral was thrown out trying to steal second, allowing Pigott to score on the throw. During the top of the second, Bowling Green answered with a game-tying run as Patrick Leonard singled home Justin O'Conner to draw even at 1-1.
Dayton and Bowling Green traded runs again shortly after the tying score. Pigott opened the home half of the third with a single and later scored on an RBI single off the bat of Joe Terry. In the top of the fifth, the Hot Rods came back for a 2-2 tie. With two outs and Tyler Goeddel at second base, Luke Maile deposited a bloop single into right field that scored Goeddel and tied the contest.
The Hot Rods broke the game open during the sixth inning. Marty Gantt singled to start the frame and worked his way to third base on a wild pitch and a ground out from Leonard. Ryan Dunn hit a double on the right field line that scored Gantt and put the Hot Rods ahead. Dunn scored on a double to left field from Brandon Martin that pushed the lead to 4-2. Later in the sixth, Tommy Coyle sent a bases-loaded single into the outfield to bring in two more runs for a 6-2 advantage.
Bowling Green added one more run in the eighth. Goeddel grounded out to shortstop and scored Dunn on the play. Dayton also scored late in the contest on a ninth-inning run for Seth Mejias-Brean. Throughout the game, the Hot Rods flashed the leather with a plethora of great defensive plays. O'Conner caught two runners trying to steal and picked off another. Leonard started a tough first-to-second double play while Martin and Dunn caught line drives.
The Hot Rods have one more series left in the first half of the season as Bowling Green travels to Lansing, MI to play the Lansing Lugnuts. A three-game series starts at 6:05 PM CDT on Friday with Hot Rods LHP Sean Bierman (2-2, 2.08) pitching against Lugnuts RHP Roberto Osuna (2-2, 2.96).
