
Bowling Green Completes Series Sweep with 7-3 Win

Dayton, Ohio-The Bowling Green Hot Rods scored four runs in the sixth inning to break a 2-2 tie on the way to a 7-3 victory over the Dayton Dragons on Thursday night at Fifth Third Field. The Hot Rods completed a sweep of the three-game series as they extended their winning streak to five straight games and improved to 36-29. The Dragons dropped their sixth straight and fell to 26-40. The first half in the Midwest League's split-season format concludes on Sunday.
Dragons starting pitcher Joel Bender, a Cincinnati native, worked the first four and two-thirds innings in his first start of the season, and left the game with a 2-1 lead. Bowling Green tied the game later in the inning as Bender was charged with two runs (one earned) on the night. He gave up four hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Pedro Diaz replaced Bender and tossed two-thirds of an inning, allowing five hits and four runs with one walk and no strikeouts. Ben Klimesh worked two innings, allowing two hits and one run with two walks and three strikeouts. Sean Lucas worked the final inning and two-thirds, allowing one hit and no runs with one walk and one strikeout.
The Dragons finished with 12 hits. Seth Mejias-Brean led the way, going 3 for 4 with a triple and a run scored. Daniel Pigott was 2 for 4 with a double and two runs scored. Joe Hudson had two hits including a double and Junior Arias also had two hits. Mejias-Brean extended his hitting streak to eight straight games and Beau Amaral had a hit to extend his streak to seven straight.
Joe Terry's RBI single in the bottom of the third gave the Dragons a 2-1 lead, and it held up until the fifth when Luke Maile delivered a run-scoring single with two outs for Bowling Green to tie the game. Then in the sixth, Diaz surrendered back-to-back RBI doubles to Ryan Dunn and Brandon Martin, giving up four runs in the inning as Bowling Green took a 6-2 lead.
The Dragons travel to South Bend, Indiana to battle the South Bend Silver Hawks on Friday at 7:35 p.m. in the first game of a three-game series to will conclude the first half of the Midwest League's split-season format. Reds 2012 first round draft pick Nick Travieso (0-1, 5.00) will start for Dayton against South Bend's Brad Allen (2-2, 5.72).
