Johnstown Chiefs News Release
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The Johnstown Chiefs fell to the Florida Everblades 4-3 in overtime Sunday night. It was the first meeting ever between the clubs in a contest between first place teams.
The Chiefs fell to 14-5-1, but remained in first place in the North Division.
Florida took advantage of a tripping penalty on Greg Gallagher with 4:55 left in the first period, as Peter Metcalf scored his second goal of the season just 27 seconds later with assists form Colin Nicholson and Jacob Micflicker. Meanwhile Anton Khudobin stopped all 11 Chiefs' shots. Kris Mayotte stopped 13 of 14 in the first period, which ended 1-0 in favor of Florida.
Florida struck again on the power play 7:09 into the second. Ernie Hartlieb scored with an assist form Micflicker after a goaltender interference call on Jason Spence to make it 2-0.
Johnstown finally solved Khudobin at the 8:52 mark. Petr Pohl showed off some fancy stickwork and beat the Florida net minder with a backhand for his eighth goal of the season. Kyle Bushee and Andy Contois both assisted on the score. Mayotte turned away an amazing 24 second period shots, including two on breakaways by Kevin Baker, to keep the Chiefs within one goal at the end of the second.
After a hooking call on Trevor Hendrikx and a delay of game on Mike Knight gave Florida a 5 on 3 advantage, Metcalf scored his second power play goal of the night with assists from Baker and Danick Bouchard to give Florida the 3-1 lead 7:06 into the third.
The Chiefs got a 5 on 3 advantage of their own and took advantage with 8:09 left in the game to cut the lead to 3-2. Andy Contois got his first goal as a Chief after Jon Landry fired the puck at the net, then Randy Rowe tipped it to Contois who found the back of the net. With 1:05 left Mayotte was pulled for an extra attacker, and it paid off for the second time this weekend, as Pohl scored his second of the night with only 33 seconds remaining and assists going to Contois and Mike Bartlett. That sent the game to overtime.
Mayotte, like he had all game, shined in overtime especially with a rolling glove save on Yannick Tifu. But with just 33 seconds left in the extra period, Doug O'Brien took a shot that just trickled by Mayotte for the win.
Mayotte stopped 53 of 57 shots in taking the first overtime loss of the season for the Chiefs, while the power play was 1-for-7 for the game.
