Flock Fends Off Revs

(Central Islip, N.Y., Aug. 25, 2011) -The Long Island Ducks defeated the York Revolution 5-4 in the opener of a three-game series on Thursday night at Bethpage Ballpark.

The Ducks plated the first run of the game on Lew Ford's RBI single to left in the first off Revs' starter Shaun Garceau. Two more runs came home on Javier Colina's mammoth home run to left in the third, increasing the lead to 3-0.

York tied the game in the top of the fourth with three runs off Ducks' starter Bob Zimmermann. A run-scoring double play ball and a two-run homer to left by Chris Nowak highlighted the inning. However, the Ducks retook the lead in the bottom half on a solo homer by Matt Esquivel and a run-scoring double by Kennard Jones for a 5-3 advantage. Octavio Martinez led off the fifth with a solo shot to left, but that was all the Revolution could score.

Zimmerman (1-1) picked up the win after going five innings, allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out two. Garceau (4-7) took the loss, giving up five runs on eight hits in six innings of work. Ehren Wassermann and Bubbie Buzachero capped the night with four scoreless innings of relief, with Buzachero earning his 18th save after recording the final six outs.

Dan Lyons led the Flock with three hits, while Colina led the way with two RBI.

The Ducks continue their three-game series with the York Revolution on Friday night. Game time is slated for 7:05 PM, with the Bethpage Ballpark gates opening at 6:05. The first 1,500 fans through the gates at the ballpark will receive Cooler Bags, courtesy of Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Dave Williams takes the mound for the Ducks against York's Dumas Garcia.

Duck Tales: Javier Colina's two-run homer in the third was his 20th of the season, as he joined Ray Navarrete in the 20-home run club among Ducks players. Colina also went deep for the fourth time in the last five games. The infielder has now picked up a hit in 13 straight games, reached base safely in 15 straight games, and scored a run in 14 consecutive contestsMatt Esquivel went deep in the fourth for his 13th home run of the season. He also leads the Ducks with four blasts against his former team in 2011Kennard Jones extended his on-base streak to 42 games with a RBI double to center in the fourth. It is the longest streak in the Atlantic League this season, and he is one away from tying the longest on-base streak by a Duck in 2010, accomplished by Robinson CancelWith the victory, the Ducks improve to 8-5 against York this season and are now 5-2 against the Revolution at Bethpage Ballpark. Long Island is also 31 games over .500 at home in 2011 with a record of 46-15.
