Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release

Bridgeport, CT - The Bridgeport Bluefish touched up Southern Maryland pitching for 15 runs on 17 hits as the Bluefish defeated the Blue Crabs 15-4 on Thursday night in front of 1,486 fans at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, CT.

Bridgeport broke out on top with a three-run third inning. In the frame, a bunt single by centerfielder Adam Greenberg scored designated hitter Brock Peterson from third to give the Bluefish a 1-0 lead. That was followed by an RBI double from second baseman Andres Perez to give Bridgeport a two-run lead. Then, with runners at second and third with two out, a dropped third strike by catcher J.R. Hopf allowed for Greenberg to score from third and make the count 3-0.

The Bluefish then put the game away with a five-run fifth inning highlighted by a two-run single from first baseman Wes Bankston, an RBI single by right fielder Danny Putnam, and a two-run double by Peterson.

Bridgeport added four more runs in the sixth inning on an RBI double from Perez, a solo homer by Bankston (22), and an RBI single by Peterson to give the Bluefish a 12-0 lead.

Southern Maryland broke up the shutout with a RBI single from centerfielder Jeremy Owens in the seventh. Third baseman Travis Garcia (15) followed that up with a three-run homer in the eighth to draw Southern Maryland to within 12-4.

The Bluefish added three more runs in the eighth inning off of two Blue Crabs position players. Outfielder Richard Giannotti started the inning and allowed an RBI single by catcher Michael Moras before a fielding error by shortstop Bridger Hunt allowed another run to score. Second baseman Brandon Pinckney came in for Southern Maryland and retired all three men he faced, one of which was a sac fly by Perez to make the final 15-4.

Bridgeport knocked out 17 hits for the game, including a 4-5 effort from Peterson who doubled twice, drove in three runs and scored two more times. Perez, Bankston, and Moras each had three hits to chip in. Perez doubled three times, drove in three, and scored twice, while Bankston drove in three and scored twice as well to go along with his homerun.

Southern Maryland, meanwhile, got a 2-4 performance from Garcia who scored twice and drove in three runs with his homer. He was the only Blue Crab with more than one hit.

Getting the win for the Bluefish was starter Esteban Yan (1-3) as he allowed four runs on seven hits in eight innings of work. He also walked two and struck out five.

Joe Gannon took the loss for Southern Maryland. The knuckle-baller made the start for the Blue Crabs after scheduled starter Michael Schlact was scratched due to a sore shoulder. Gannon took one for the team as he allowed 12 runs on 13 hits in 5.1 innings of work. He suffered the loss to fall to 1-2.

The Blue Crabs take on the Bluefish in game two of their three-game series from Harbor Yard on Friday at 7:05. Southern Maryland will send right-hander Nick Green (8-5, 3.79 ERA) to the hill against fellow-righty Matt Pike (8-5, 3.83 ERA) for the Bluefish. The game can be heard on www.somdbluecrabs.com.
