Norfolk Admirals News Release
NORFOLK, VA - Penguins netminder Marc-Andre Fleury made the best of the first start of his conditioning stint, as the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (29-18-0-3) goalie stopped 30 of 31 shots in a 3-1 defeat of the Norfolk Admirals (17-29-2-4) on Wednesday evening at Norfolk Scope Arena.
The Penguins got on the board first midway through the first period. Tim Brent collected a bouncing puck in the low slot and sent it through the leg pads of goaltender Marc Denis at 11:34.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton doubled their lead midway through the second period when David Gove scored shorthanded at 11:40.
The Admirals sliced their deficit in half with a power play shot that deflected twice on its way past Fleury. David Schneider sent a point shot that was deflected first by Junior Lessard in the slot and then by Paul Szczechura near the bottom of the right circle at 18:11.
However, the Penguins seized control of the game with midway through the third period when Tyler Kennedy's shot from the left point went through a screen and eluded Denis at 8:49. Fleury stopped all 16 of Norfolk's third period shots en route to his first AHL victory since November 2005.
Marc Denis (27 shots, 24 saves) picked up the loss. Marc-Andre Fleury (31 shots, 30 saves) earned the win.
Norfolk was 1-6 on the power play. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was 0-5.
The Admirals will conclude a six-game homestand by battling the Worcester Sharks on Friday and Saturday nights at Scope. The puck drops for both games at 7:15. Be sure to get to Scope this weekend because the team won't return home until March 7!
