Rancho Cucamonga, CA. - A late rally fell a hit shy in the Modesto Nuts' 2-1 loss against the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes on Tuesday night at LoanMart Field.

Down by a run heading to the ninth, Nick Zammarelli doubled to start the inning. Anthony Jimenez followed and bounced a weak grounder to short. Zammarelli tried to advance to third but was thrown out for the first out of the inning. Joe Rizzo followed and lifted a single into left. Jimenez was able to go first to third on the play. The Quakes (12-14) brought in Andrew Istler (S, 1/1) who struck out Gareth Morgan. Garrett Kennedy smacked a line drive that looked like it had a ticket for right field. Second baseman Gavin Lux dove to his left to make a miraculous catch to end the game.

John Richy (L, 0-3) allowed the only run scoring swing for the Quakes in the sixth when Zach Reks smashed a two-run triple off the left field wall.

Randy Bell started for the Nuts (10-16) and tossed five shutout innings with five strikeouts before exiting with the lead.

The Nuts got their lone run against starter Dean Kremer (1-1) who worked six frames and struck out a career-high nine batters.

The Nuts continue a four-game series with the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes on Wednesday morning. First pitch is set for 10:35 p.m. Coverage on ModestoNuts.com will start at 10:30 p.m. Listen live online on your phone, tablet or PC.
