Last Week's Games
Friday, December 19th - Quad City 1 at Manitoba 3
The Flames dropped a 3-1 decision on Friday night in Manitoba. The Moose scored in each period and received contributions from three different goal scorers. David Van der Gulik scored the lone Flames goal. The loss extended the Flames winless streak to a franchise-record tying seven games (0-4-2-1). Michel Ouellet netted the only goal of the opening period when he scored during a Moose power play at the 8:46 mark. Ouellet scored when he found a loose puck on the Flames goal line following a shot by Mark Derlago. The veteran sniper knocked the puck into the Flames net to put Manitoba in front. The highlight of the first period for Quad City was killing a 5-on-3 Manitoba power play that lasted nearly two full minutes late in the opening frame. The teams traded second period markers as Manitoba's Mark Cullen scored at even strength just 1:21 before a power-play goal by David Van der Gulik. Cullen netted his 11th goal of 2008-09 when he tipped a point shot by Daniel Rahimi past Quad City's Matt Keetley. Quad City responded on the man advantage. Carsen Germyn sent a slap shot from the point into the Manitoba crease. Moose netminder Karl Goehring was able to make the initial save, but could not deny Van der Gulik on the rebound attempt. The Flames winger netted his eighth goal of the season to slice the Moose lead in half. The teams were still separated by a single goal as the middle period expired. Mario Bliznak netted an insurance goal with 10:52 left in regulation when he buried a one-timer following a feed from Alexandre Buldoc. A late power play for Quad City wasn't enough to beat Karl Goehring as he stopped 13 third period shots and Manitoba earned the win by a final of 3-1.
Saturday, December 20th - Quad City 2 at Manitoba 1
The Flames earned a dramatic 2-1 win over the AHL's top team, the Manitoba Moose, in their final game before a five-day holiday break. After falling behind 1-0 on a first period goal by Alexandre Bolduc, the Flames battled back to win on unanswered goals by Jamie Lundmark and Aki Seitsonen. Lundmark's tally came in his first game back from a three-game recall to the NHL's Calgary Flames. Seitsonen's goal was his second of the season and stood up as the game-winning tally. Leland Irving earned the win after stopped 25 Manitoba shots including 11 in the opening period. The Moose netted the only goal of the opening frame at 4:15 of the period. Raymond Sawada and Alexandre Bolduc broke into the Flames zone on a 2-on-1 break. Sawada fed Bolduc, who beat Flames netminder Leland Irving for his fourth goal of the season. The early first period goal was part of an early rush that saw the Moose outshoot the Flames 9-2 through the early stages of the period. The Flames evened play up as the period continued but were unable to beat Manitoba netminder Karl Goehring through the opening 20 minutes. The Flames rolled their late first period momentum over to the second frame. Quad City outshot Manitoba 14-8 in the middle period and netted the only goal of the frame. Jamie Lundmark scored on a shot from just above the right wing circle during a Flames power play. Brett Palin earned the primary assist while Kyle Greentree was credited with a secondary helper. The man advantage marker tied the game at one, a score that stood at the end of two periods. Aki Seitsonen netted the game-winning goal just 1:47 into the third period when he scored a transition goal following a feed from Cam Cunning. The tally stood up as the Flames limited the Moose to just six shots in the closing period.
