Adirondack Phantoms News Release
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 26 - PHANTOMS VS. WILKES-BARRE/SCRANTON PENGUINS - 7:05, Wachovia Spectrum
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (Pittsburgh Penguins) come to the Wachovia Spectrum for the second time in two weeks as the clubs meet for the fourth time this season. The Phantoms have won the last two meetings over Wilkes-Barre/Scranton - in fact, those two games are the only ones the Penguins have lost in regulation in their last 10 games played. The Pens are 17-11-1-1 on the year for 36 points, which slots them in fourth in the AHL's East Division, three points behind the Phantoms. Chris Minard leads the way with 20 goals and 13 assists for 33 points, which ties him with Claude Giroux for the fourth-highest point total in the league. Minard's 20 goals rank him tops in the circuit.
SATURDAY. DEC. 27 - PHANTOMS at NORFOLK ADMIRALS, 7:15 PM - Norfolk Scope
The Phantoms battle the Norfolk Admirals (Tampa Bay Lightning) for the second consecutive Saturday, with this week's engagement taking place at Norfolk Scope. Both games between the clubs have gone to extra time this season - the Phantoms won 4-3 in overtime at Scope back on October 28, while the Admirals returned serve with a shootout win last Saturday in Steve Downie's return to the Spectrum. Karri Ramo, whose performance was instrumental in Norfolk's win and earned him the second star of the game, was recalled to Tampa Bay yesterday.
KIDS TICKETS NOW FIVE DOLLARS
As announced earlier today, all Phantoms kids tickets are now just $5 for the rest of the 2008-09 season. The new kids price was made possible through a partnership with Babies 'R Us. Fans can pick up kids tickets at the new price beginning Friday when the Phantoms host Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. More information is available at Phantomshockey.com.
AWFUL GIFT NIGHT THIS FRIDAY NIGHT
If you get one of those gifts this week that just makes you raise your eyebrows a little bit, the Phantoms have a great option for you. Instead of just letting it clutter up a closet, bring it to Friday night's tilt against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. No, you won't be able to throw it on the ice. But you CAN give it to the Phantoms when you come into the Spectrum. Your gift will be perfect for someone else out there, and the Phantoms will donate all items to a charity who will find the perfect recipient. For each gift turned in, you'll receive a raffle ticket good for a drawing for a team-autographed goalie stick.
Friday's game is the perfect opportunity to get out of the house after a day or two or three of Christmas craziness. Gametime is 7:05 - visit Phantomshockey.com for tickets or call 1-800-298-4200. Remember, all kids tickets are now just $5!
GET YOUR HOCKEY LOVERS PACKAGE
For one great price, you can enjoy all the hockey at the Wachovia Complex - great NHL action with the Philadelphia Flyers, and the opportunity to see the Flyers of tomorrow with the Philadelphia Phantoms. You get 10 Phantoms tickets to use at any point throughout the season, as well as two tickets to a Flyers game. Call the Phantoms at 215-465-4522 for more detaisl.
SANTA SACKS GOING FAST
It's still not too late to give the gift of Phantoms hockey with the Phantoms Santa Sack! The packages include Phantoms tickets and a unique autographed gift. Santa Sacks can be ordered through 1 PM Wednesday and even after Christmas itself, and redeemed following the holidays. For more information and to order, visit Phantomshockey.com.
GIROUX NOMINATED FOR PLAYER OF THE WEEK
The Phantoms nominated rookie winger Claude Giroux for Reebok/AHL Player of the Week consideration this week. Giroux continued his torrid scoring pace this week with three consecutive two-point games as the Phantoms pushed their current streak to eight games without a regulation loss. Giroux had a goal and an assist in each of Philadelphia's three games this week and finished with a plus-four rating. Giroux now has points in six consecutive games and seven of his last eight. He has eight goals and six assists for 14 points in eight December games, and currently leads both the Phantoms and all AHL rookies in scoring with 33 points.
NEWS AND NOTES
Philadelphia's streak without a regulation loss has reached eight games. The third-place Phantoms have collected 15 of a possible 16 points in December while transforming what was a 12-11-0-0 record at the start of the month into a 19-11-0-1 record entering the Christmas break. The Phantoms have pulled within four points of second-place Bridgeport and six of first-place Hershey, while opening up a three point lead over Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Binghamton. Before the streak started, the Phantoms were 11 points behind the Bears and eight behind Bridgeport.
The Phantoms came a mere shootout loss away from reaching 20 wins before Christmas for what would have been just the fifth time in team history. Last year's club was the fourth team to accomplish that feat, joining the teams from 96-97, 97-98 and 04-05.
Last year's Phantoms hit the Christmas holiday having played 29 games, posting a record of 20-8-1-0 for 41 points. This year's club has played two more games and has assembled a record of 19-11-0-1 for 39 points. However, last year's 41 points was good for first place and a five-point lead over Albany in the East Division at Christmastime. This year, the 39 points are only good for third place, six back of Hershey in the division.
Philadelphia's top five scorers during December:
Claude Giroux - 8GP, 8-6-14, +12
Jared Ross - 8GP, 7-7-14, +10
Patrick Maroon - 8GP, 4-5-9, +5
Boyd Kane - 8GP, 2-5-7, +8
Danny Syvret - 8GP, 0-6-6, +9
In addition, Nate Guenin is a plus-10 on the month. Nobody on Philadelphia's entire roster has a minus rating for December.
