Five-win week propels Mavericks to second place in division

November 21, 2017 - ECHL (ECHL) News Release

Playing five games in six days in four different cities last week did nothing to deter the Kansas City Mavericks, who won each of the five games to improve to 9-6-0 on the season and move into second place of the Central Division.

The Mavericks opened the week with a 5-2 win at home over Tulsa on Tuesday. Shawn Pauly paced the offensive attack with four points (3g-1a) while Hunter Smith added three points (1g-2a) of his own. Tyler Parsons stopped 34 of the 36 shots he faced to pick up the win in goal.

On Wednesday, Kansas City escaped with a 2-1 overtime win at Wichita. Darren Nowick notched the game-winning tally just 19 seconds into the extra session and Parsons stopped 38 shots to pick up his second straight win.

The Mavericks headed to Fort Wayne on Friday and came away with another overtime victory, this time by a 4-3 margin. After spotting the Komets an early 1-0 lead, Kansas City scored the next three goals only to see Fort Wayne pull even with a pair of third-period goals. Mike McMurtry recorded the winning tally just under two minutes into overtime.

Saturday saw Kansas City open a two-game series at Quad City with a 5-1 victory. Five different Mavericks scored goals in the win while Patch Alber picked up four assists. Mason McDonald recorded the win with 21 saves on 22 shots.

The Mavericks ended their busy week with a 2-0 win over the Mallards on Sunday. Smith and Jordan Kwas tallied goals and Parsons earned his first professional shutout with 28 saves.

McMurtry leads Kansas City with 16 points (6g-10a) while Matt Robertson has a team-high seven goals.

Parsons is tied for third in the league with six wins while ranking third with 323 saves and fifth with 600 minutes played.

This week, the Mavericks host Wichita on Wednesday, are at Kalamazoo on Friday and Indy on Saturday, and return home to host Quad City on Sunday.
