Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

MYRTLE BEACH, SC- With yet another 19-year old fireballer on the mound for the Pelicans, the folks at BB&T Coastal Field were hoping for a déjà vu performance like the 12-strikeout, seven-inning performance that Julio Teheran tossed out against Potomac on Wednesday. Unfortunately for the Birds, some shaky defense doomed the home team for the second consecutive day as the Frederick Keys plated five unearned runs en route to an 8-6 victory over Myrtle Beach.

Arodys Vizcaino, the 19-year old phenom, got the nod on the hill for his second start in the Carolina League and improved a bit upon his debut last Saturday but was still inconsistent on the hill through 4 2/3 innings. Vizcaino struck out four and walked a pair in his time on the hill while hitting 96 mph on the radar gun. His first two outings in the Carolina League have eerily similar final lines to his first two starts in the South Atlantic League this season, so it should only be a matter of time before Vizcaino becomes comfortable in his new surroundings.

The Keys jumped out to an early 3-0 lead off Vizcaino with three in the first two innings, capped off by a two-run home run from leadoff hitter Xavier Avery. For Vizcaino, it was just the second home run allowed all season long combined between the two levels.

The Pelicans stormed back, however, in the bottom of the third when L.V. Ware plated Calvin Culver on a sacrifice fly to get the Pelicans on the board before a three-run fourth inning gave the Birds a short-lived lead. Mycal Jones led off the frame with a double and stole third base. With two strikes, two outs, and Dan Nelson at the plate, the designated hitter golfed a pitch from Rick Zagone into left to score Jones to cut the lead to 3-2. Zagone (4-6) then proceeded to pick Nelson off first, but the throw down to second base was dropped by Miguel Abreu, extending the inning for Samuel Sime. On the next pitch, Sime deposited the Zagone offering into the left field bleachers for his second home run of the year, giving the Birds a 4-3 lead.

In the ensuing frame, the Keys scored a run on a perfectly executed hit-and-run to tie the game, then proceeded to score three unearned runs off reliever Angelo Paulino (1-2) in the sixth to put the game away. Shortstop Greg Miclat, an All-Star this season, led the charge going 4-for-5 with a run batted in on the evening.

The Birds made it interesting in the bottom of the ninth off monstrous closer Jose Diaz when Mike Jones blasted his second home run of the season to deep right-center field to cut the lead to 8-6. Nelson, who finished 3-for-3 on the evening, followed with a double to right and moved to third base after a walk to Matt Kennelly. With the tying run on the basepaths, Diaz was in trouble, but the 6-4, 300 lb hurler induced a 6-4-3 double play from Calvin Culver to end the game and give game one to the Keys.

These two teams will be back tomorrow night with first pitch at 7:05 ET.

For Show Time Saturdays this season, the Pelicans have entertained their fans with chainsaw-juggling madmen, ferociously fierce former wrestlers, and iron-clad superheroes, and the final Saturday of the season's first half brings another excellent entertainment act to BB&T Coastal Field when Dave the Horn Guy will be playing his unique brand of horn-driven sound all throughout the Birds' matchup with the Keys. Be sure to snatch up your tickets now to catch the excitement!
