Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
The Hillcats fell 5-4 in ten innings in a back and forth affair at Potomac. Alex Buchholz (pictured) hit his sixth home run of the season in the loss. Game two of the set is slated for 6:35 p.m. at Pfitzner Stadium. Tune-in for all the live action on 105.5 FM KD Country.
Potomac struck early with a run in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. After a one-out walk to Steve Lomberdozzi, Mike Burgess smacked an RBI triple off the wall in center field to give the P-Nats the first run of the night. In the third inning Will Ortiz hit the first pitch of the frame over the wall in left to double the Nationals advantage at 2-0.
Entering the sixth inning Lynchburg was still looking for their first hit of the evening off starter Brad Peacock. In the inning the Hillcats would not only collect a hit, they would turn a two-run deficit into a two-run lead with a four-run inning. Alex Buchholz blasted a two-run homer out to left to tie the game at two a piece. Three more hits in the inning with the aid of two errors by the Nationals led to two unearned runs that gave the Green & Gold their first lead of the night at 4-2.
That lead stood until the bottom of the eighth inning when a tw-run homer by Bill Rhinehart would erase that advantage and tie the contest at four. The homer was initially ruled in play off the wall in right center and then the call was reversed. Hillcats manager Pat Kelly argued the call and was ejected for the first time this season.
The game stayed tied into extra-innings until the Nationals scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the tenth inning on an RBI single by Derek Norris to give the P-Nats a 5-4 series opening victory. The win went to Patrick McCoy (1-1) for Potomac (30-38) and the loss went to Sean Watson (1-3) for Lynchburg (28-40).
Game two of the series is set for Saturday night at 6:35 p.m. at Pfitzner Stadium with right-hander Mark Serrano (2-4, 3.62) going for the Hillcats opposite fellow righty Jesse Estrada (2-1, 3.83) for the Nationals.
