Potomac Nationals News Release

Steve Lombardozzi had a big night at the plate Friday against Lynchburg, but it was his open-field tackling ability that sealed the 5-4 win for Potomac in the bottom of the 10th inning.

With Lombardozzi on second after a leadoff double and an intentional walk of Mike Burgess, Derek Norris singled to shallow center field. Lombardozzi rounded third to find catcher Kevin Coddington awaiting the on-time throw, but he tackled Coddington, making the catch impossible and ending the game in walk-off fashion.

Potomac improves to 30-38 while Lynchburg falls to 28-40.

Pat McCoy picked up the win after tossing two scoreless innings in the ninth and 10th. Potomac starter Brad Peacock was brilliant through five, holding the Hillcats hitless while the P-Nats accumulated a 2-0 lead. But the sixth inning was not kind to the starter.

Carlos Mendez singled to right with one out. Pitching coach Paul Menhart visited the mound to talk it over, but it didn't help. The next pitch to Alex Buchholz sailed over the left-field fence to cut the lead to 4-2.

Josh Fellhauer hit a two-out double, moved to third on a single by Jose Gualdron and scored on a throwing error by shortstop Will Ortiz. After that, Cory VanAllen took over for Peacock.

Ortiz committed his second error of the inning on a Kyle Day single, allowing Gualdron single. VanAllen finally ended the inning, picking off Day at first.

The P-Nats tied the game in the eighth. Lombardozzi hit a one-out double before Bill Rhinehart blasted one over the center field wall. The homer hit the batter's eye, and was initially ruled a double, After manager Gary Catchcart stated his case, the decision was reversed.

The appeal decision didn't sit well with Lynchburg manager Pat Kelly. Kelly was tossed by the home plate umpire after tossing his helmet in disgust.

The P-Nats and Hillcats face off again Saturday at 6:35 p.m.
