WILLMAR, Minn. - Willmar capitalized on three errors in the third inning to break a scoreless tie with five unearned runs on four hits and led the rest of the way in a 7-2 victory against Alexandria at Bill Taunton Stadium Tuesday night.
After Zach Benson (Stephen F. Austin) reached on a throwing error to begin the third, Forrestt Allday (Central Arkansas) singled and Mitch Rowan (San Francisco) reached on an error on a sacrifice bunt attempt to load the bases with nobody out. Two batters later, Michael Suchy (Florida Gulf Coast) lined a ball up the middle to score two runs and give the Stingers the first lead of the game. Kenny Roberts (Alabama) immediately followed with an RBI double down the left field line to drive home Rowan and Suchy to give the Stingers a 4-0 advantage. Roberts later scored on the third error of the inning.
Jerad McCrummen (Texas Tech) pitched five innings, giving up only two runs and six hits while striking out three to improve to 5-1. Andrew Pulido (San Francisco) received his first save of the year for tossing four scoreless innings in relief with only one hit allowed.
Allday led off the sixth with a triple and scored later on an RBI single by Suchy with two outs. Suchy now has 47 RBIs for the second most in the Northwoods League and leads the team with a .345 batting average after going 3-for-5 with three RBIs Tuesday.
The Stingers scored their seventh and final run on an RBI double by Allday, which scored Dillon Haupt (San Diego). Allday went 3-for-5 in the game with two extra-base hits and two runs scored. Corben Green (Louisiana Monroe) went 0-for-3 in the game to snap his 20-game hitting streak, which ends as the seventh longest in Northwoods League history.
Willmar will travel to Alexandria to play the Beetles at Knute Nelson Memorial Park Wednesday at 7:05 p.m.
