Wausau Woodchucks News Release
WISCONSIN RAPIDS - The Wisconsin Woodchucks used great performances on the mound by Austin Pettibone and Jackson Lowery to defeat the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters 5-2 and sweep the Rafters in a two-game set.
The Woodchucks would keep their offense hot after a nine-run performance on Monday by getting on the board in the top of the first. Eric Filia-Snyder singled with one out, stole second base, and went to third on a wild pitch by Rafter starter Cole Webb. With Filia-Snyder on third, Brendon Hayden singled to right, picking up his 30th RBI of the season as the Woodchucks took a 1-0 lead.
After Woodchuck starter Austin Pettibone struck out the side in the bottom of the first, the "ËChucks struck again in the second. Gage Green doubled with two outs and went to third on a wild pitch by Webb. With Mike Bernal at the plate, Green broke towards home on a pitch that got away from the catcher Ammirati and scored, putting the "ËChucks on top 2-0.
The Woodchucks would keep their 2-0 lead all the way until the fifth when Filia-Snyder flashed his power once again. With Green on first and two outs, Filia-Snyder hit a fly ball far over the right field wall, his third base hit of the ballgame and third home run of the season, to put the "ËChucks on top 4-0.
The "ËChucks would tack on one more in the top of the sixth off of Webb. Hayden led off with a walk, went to second on a single by Madison Carter, and would score on a single by Jake Jelmini to make it a 5-0 lead.
The Rafters would not get on the board against Pettibone until the bottom of the sixth. Sean Godfrey singled with one out and stole second base with Kenny Towns at the plate. Godfrey then broke towards third, the catcher Skyler Ewing tried to throw him out at third, but his throw was wild, as Godfrey scored, breaking up Pettibone's shutout.
During the bottom of the sixth, lightning approached the stadium, and the rain began to fall. At the end of the sixth, the rain fell harder, and the game went into a rain delay. After a delay of 55 minutes, play resumed in the top of the seventh with the Woodchucks leading, 5-1.
Pettibone's night was done after the rain delay, but it was his best performance of the season. He pitched six solid innings, allowing only the one unearned run in the sixth on three hits and six strikeouts.
Jackson Lowery struck out the side on ten pitches in the seventh, but ran into some trouble in his second inning of work. With Eric Loxtercamp on second and two outs, Kenny Towns doubled to left, scoring Loxtercamp and cutting the "ËChucks lead to three.
That would be all that Lowery would allow, though, as he shut down the Rafters in the ninth to pick up the save. Lowery pitched three innings, allowed one earned run, and struck out seven batters as he picked up his fourth save of the season in the Woodchucks' 5-2 victory.
The Woodchucks improved to 11-1 in the second half and won their sixth consecutive ballgame. The "ËChucks will be back at home tomorrow to face the Madison Mallards at 6:35 with Austin Stadler on the mound.
