Five-Run Inning Sinks Barons in Huntsville

Birmingham, AL - The Birmingham Barons dropped their series opener against the Huntsville Stars by a score of 8-1 Thursday night at Joe Davis Stadium.

The Stars effectively put the game away in the first inning, scoring five runs and chasing starter Nick McCully (2-3, 6.55) from the game after just 0.1 IP. Nick Ramirez started the scoring with a two-run home run. RBI singles from ShawnZarraga and Adam Weisenburger followed, giving the Stars a 5-0 lead. McCully allowed five runs on five hits and walked three while the only out came on a caught stealing.

Kevan Smith provided the lone Barons run with a solo home run in the second inning. The long ball was his third of the 2014 season.

The stars would score two additional runs in the third and a single run in the seventh for the final winning margin of 8-1.

Stars starter Tyler Cravy (7-1, 1.87) picked up his league-leading seventh win allowing a run on four hits while striking out three over 6.0 IP.

Josh Richmond finished with two of the Barons six hits on night, going 2-for-2 with two walks.

With the loss, the Barons fell to 16-24 on the season while Huntsville improved to 27-14. The Barons will look to rebound tomorrow night as RHP Chris Beck (2-5, 4.26) to the hill against RHP Drew Gagnon (3-1, 2.76). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM CDT on Thursday.
