Five-Run Fifth Dooms 'Caps

FORT WAYNE, IN - The West Michigan Whitecaps had a lead for all of five minutes, but a five-run fifth inning resulted in a 7-3 loss to the Fort Wayne TinCaps on Thursday night at Parkview Field.

The TinCaps opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the second. Run-scoring singles by Carlos Belen and Jack Suwinski highlighted the frame before the Whitecaps rallied with a run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead. Luke Burch tripled and scored for West Michigan's first run before giving the team a brief advantage on an RBI-single. The lead lasted all of four batters and five minutes as Fort Wayne tallied five runs in the fifth inning to pull away from the "Caps and take a 7-3 lead. Two-run singles by Tirso Ornelas and Luis Campusano highlighted the frame.

Fort Wayne starting pitcher and Mount Pleasant, MI native Aaron Leasher (2-2) allowed just three runs in five innings while striking out eight to earn his second victory of the season. Whitecaps starter Jesus Rodriguez (2-2) gave up six TinCaps runs in taking his second 2018 defeat. The Whitecaps record falls to 20-19 - their worst record since April 8, while the TinCaps take three of the four games in this series to improve to 17-22. Burch tallied four hits in a losing cause for the "Caps.
