New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
Manchester, NH- The New Hampshire Fisher Cats exploded for eight runs on seven hits -including home runs from Ryan Klosterman and Aaron Mathews- between the fourth and fifth innings to erase a 5-0 deficit and beat the Reading Phillies, 8-5, for their third straight victory.
New Hampshire (8-15) batted around in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring five runs on four hits and a critical Phillies' error to tie the game, 5-5. Klosterman (walk) and Brian Jeroloman (single) reached off Reading starter Fabio Castro, who then yielded an RBI single to Mathews (3-for-5, HR, 3 RBI, 2 R) moments after first baseman Juan Tejeda dropped a Mathews' foul pop fly for an error.
Castro's night ended after he walked Chris Gutierrez (0-for-3, 2 BB, R) and served up a two-run single to Ryan Patterson (2-for-4, 2 RBI, R). The left-hander allowed five runs-three earned- on six hits and five walks in 3.1 innings.
Reliever Ron Hill allowed Jacob Butler (2-for-3, 2B, RBI) to drill a double to left field, scoring Gutierrez, and Travis Snider (0-for-4, RBI) followed with a run-scoring ground out, plating Patterson for his first Eastern League RBI.
The Fisher Cats added three more runs against Hill in the bottom of the fifth inning when Klosterman (1-for-2, HR, 2 R, RBI, 2 BB) hit a 3-2 pitch off the facing of the Samuel Adams Bar and Grill for his first home run of the season. After Jeroloman (2-for-4, 2 R) singled, Mathews took a 2-0 pitch the opposite way for his first homer of the season, a two-run fly that bounced off the access road in right field.
Hill (1-1) allowed three runs on four hits and a walk in one inning to absorb the loss for Reading (12-12).
Reliever Daryl Harang (2-2) pitched a season-high 3.2 scoreless innings of relief to earn the win. The left-hander held Reading to two hits and did not register a walk or strikeout.
Right-hander Zach Dials retired the side in order in the ninth inning to register his second save.
The Phillies jumped out to a 2-0 lead against Fisher Cats starter Ricky Romero in the top of the first inning on Lou Marson's two-run single, scoring Michael Spidale (walk) and Greg Golson (single).
Reading increased the lead to 4-0 against Romero in the top of the third inning on Neil Sellers' two-out, two-run double that scored Jeremy Slayden (single) and Tejeda (walk).
Gookie Dawkins led off the top of the fourth inning with his first home run of the year, a shot off Romero that cleared the left field wall and landed in the Poultry Products Dinner in the Den.
Romero allowed five runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings. The left-hander walked four and struck out two.
Overcoming the five-run deficit matched a Fisher Cats' franchise record and stretched their season-long winning streak to three games. New Hampshire left-hander Brett Cecil (0-0, 0.00), rated the Toronto Blue Jays #2 prospect by Baseball America, makes his Eastern League debut Wednesday night at 6:35pm against Reading right-hander Carlos Carrasco (1-2, 3.91), ranked by Baseball America as the Philadelphia Phillies' #1 prospect. Coverage begins at 6:15pm on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network with Bob Lipman and Mike Murphy.
Wednesday night is U.S. Cellular Most Improved Student Night at Merchantsauto.com Stadium and fans can play USA Subs Baseball Bingo. For tickets, call (603) 641-2005 or visit www.nhfishercats.com.
