Connecticut Defenders News Release
NORWICH, CT- The afternoon was dreary, the evening was clear, but the Defenders dropped their sixth in a row as the Trenton Thunder surged late to upend Connecticut, 4-1.
Joey Martinez was magnificent for six innings as he tossed scoreless baseball, scattered four base hits, struck out six and walked none. When Martinez left the game he was in line for his first win of the season.
The Defenders would be the first to crack the run column. In the home half of the sixth Travis Ishikawa hit a rocket to Thunder second baseman Kevin Russo. Russo stopped it and tried to retire Travis Denker at second to end the inning but Denker's take out slide derailed the covering Reegie Corona as Antoan Richardson crossed the plate to make it a 1-0 game.
As quick as the Defenders had claimed the lead, they gave the arduously ascertained run back in the top of the seventh. Kelvin Pichardo walked in a run as Ronnie Ray came in and preserved the 1-1 tie despite inheriting a no-out bases-loaded jam. Ray induced an infield fly ball, and back-to-back looking strikeouts to retire the side.
The Thunder were right back on the horse in the eighth inning as they plated three runs on three hits and two errors. The big blow came off the bat of Cody Ehlers who sent a towering bomb to right-center field to cap off the offensive outburst.
Chase Wright earned his fourth win of the year as his final line was impressive: seven full innings, one earned run, four hits, one walk, and four strikeouts.
The Defenders will take on the Thunder Wednesday night at 6:35pm. Tickets are still available for the contest on ctdefenders.com or by calling the box office at (860) 887-7962.
