Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
A complete effort gave the Winnipeg Goldeyes a dominating win over the rival Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks Saturday night, but the out-of-town scoreboard ended Winnipeg's playoff hopes.
As the Goldeyes shutout the RedHawks 9-0 in front of 5,874 fans at Shaw Park, the Gary SouthShore RailCats defeated the El Paso Diablos 7-4 at U.S. Steel Yard in Gary to clinch the sole American Association wild card playoff spot. The Goldeyes are 2 1/2 games behind Gary with two contests to play and simply ran out of games on the schedule.
The win for Winnipeg breaks an 11-game regular season losing streak against the RedHawks.
In the second inning, Ryan Scoma hit a solo home run to lead off the inning and Kevin Moesquit stroked a two-run single to give Winnipeg a 3-0 lead.
Winnipeg added three more in the sixth inning, as Josh Mazzola singled in Ray Sadler, Luis Alen doubled home Mazzola and Amos Ramon drove in Casey Haerther with a single.
An inning later the Goldeyes tallied three more times for a 9-0 lead. Sadler smacked a two-run home run, while Haerther singled in Mazzola.
Starting pitcher Jason Jarvis didn't allow a run in 7 2/3 innings of work to pick up his seventh win of the season. In fact, he took a perfect game into the sixth inning.
Brendan Lafferty relieved Jarvis in the eighth inning and finished the game in his 51st appearance of the season, which ties him with Brian Beuning for the team record for most games by a pitcher in a season. Beuning pitched in 51 games in 2008.
Fargo starter Danny Gutierrez suffered the loss for the RedHawks.
Winnipeg and Fargo meet again at Shaw Park Sunday afternoon. Game time is 1:30 p.m.
Tickets for all Goldeyes games are available through Ticketmaster by clicking on Ticketmaster.ca, calling 1-855-GOLDEYE or visiting any Ticketmaster location, including the Shaw Park box office.
