Brockett, Liles Lead RailCats to Comeback Win

Gary, IN - Ryan Brockett's two-run double with the bases loaded in the eighth inning drove the RailCats to a 7-4 win over El Paso on Sunday afternoon. Gary SouthShore improved to 58-40 and El Paso dropped to 38-61.

After Diablos starter Kevin Cooper went seven innings, the RailCats bats awoke with three straight singles against Justin Kuks and Marshall Schuler with one out in the eighth inning. Brockett then drove a double over the head of left fielder Reyes Delgado to score Craig Maddox and Brian Kolb to take a 6-4 lead. Nick Liles followed with his third hit of the game; a single through the middle to score Drew Martinez.

Estevan Uriegas earned his first save of the year allowing just one hit in the ninth as the RailCats rallied for a victory for the 23rd time this season.

El Paso jumped on top for the second game in a row in the series when Maikol Gonzalez drew a leadoff walk aginainst rookie RailCat starter Tim Verthein. Gonzalez moved to second on a fielder's choice and scored on an RBI double by Wellington Dotel to give the Diablos a 1-0 lead.

The RailCats came back to take the lead in the bottom of the third when Nick Liles led off with a double down the left field line and Adam Klein reached on an infield single off Diablos starter Kevin Cooper. Mike Massaro tied the game with a fielder's choice RBI and Cristian Guerrero hammered an 0-1 offering off the left field scoreboard for his fifth home run of the year to make it 3-1.

El Paso took the lead in the sixth inning against a tiring Tim Verthein. Verthein, who made his professional debut Sunday afternoon, left with runners on first and second with one out in the inning. Chuck Fontana entered Sergio Burruel to ground into a fielder's choice for the second out.

Juan Apodaca then grounded to short and Ryan Brockett's throw was wild to second allowing Wellington Dotel to score. Anthony D'Alfonso then hit a two-run double to center to take a 4-3 lead for the Diablos.

The game didn't stay tied for long as in the bottom of the seventh, as the RailCats got back-to-back singled with one out. After Ryan Babineau struck out, Mike Massaro tied the game with a single.

That set up Brockett's eighth inning heroics, atoning for his error earlier in the game.

Kevin Cooper, the starter for El Paso, took a no-decision despite striking out eight RailCats in seven innings. He allowed four runs on nine hits and one walk.

Will Krout earned his first win since returning to the RailCats with a scoreless eighth inning of relief.
