Tacoma Rainiers News Release
Tacoma, WA - The Pacific Coast League Northern Division-leading Rainiers open their first homestand since the All-Star Break hosting a four-game series against Sacramento beginning at 7:00pm tonight.
The Rainiers final series of the season against the River Cats will feature some new faces as top Mariners prospects Dustin Ackley, Edward Paredes and Anthony Varvaro each make their Cheney Stadium debuts.
The second overall pick in the 2009 draft, Ackley leads the class having recorded four extra-base hits and driven in eight runs since joining the Rainiers on July 15, including a home run in his first swing on the road at Reno. The 22-year-old infielder is currently rated by Baseball America as the 11th overall prospect in the minor leagues.
Fellow phenom Michael Pineda takes the mound for Tacoma in the series opener on Friday in his first start since extending his record to 3-0 with the Rainiers this season. The right-hander is slated to face off against Triple-A All-Star Clayton Mortensen as he attempts to collect his league-leading 11th win, with Friday Night Fireworks following the conclusion of the game.
Each member of the team will wear specialty Husky purple jerseys as the Rainiers host Paint the Park Purple on Saturday, July 24 - a fundraiser for the University of Washington, Tacoma scholarship fund. The starting line-up's jerseys will be autographed and then auctioned off immediately following the game in the Rainiers first-ever live auction, with all proceeds going to benefit scholarships for UW Tacoma Students.
Fans also have an opportunity to play RainiersBall again this weekend and every weekend of a homestand for the remainder of the season. Participants can trade in their non-winning Powerball tickets at the Customer Service booth and select a RainiersBall number. If their number comes up, they win. Prize packages include: lunch with a Rainiers player, an upgrade to Gold Club tickets, or coming into the park early to watch batting practice and meet members of the team.
