Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - Sam Fuld was 3-for-4 with a pair of walks and four runs scored as the Iowa Cubs defeated the Round Rock Express 10-2 in Friday night's series opener at The Dell Diamond. The Express (42-58) saw their three-game winning streak snapped, while the Cubs (55-45) moved to 7-2 against the Express this season.
Fuld walked to lead off the game and later scored on Ty Wright's two-out, RBI single. Iowa never relinquished that lead, adding a run on three hits in the third, two runs on three hits in the seventh and pulling away over the game's final two innings.
Iowa starter J.R. Mathes (8-6) allowed two runs on five hits and a walk with four strikeouts over 6.2 innings for the win. Express starter Shane Loux (2-9) suffered his eighth consecutive loss; he allowed four runs on eight hits and three walks with five strikeouts in 6.0-plus innings, facing three batters in the fourth.
Fuld led off the third with a triple, and Darwin Barney followed with an RBI single. Fuld again got things going in the seventh, leading off with a single and stealing second. After Barney was hit by a pitch, Brad Snyder scored Fuld with an RBI single. Micah Hoffpauir capped the inning with an RBI single before Express reliever Gary Majewski struck out the next three batters.
Round Rock rallied for a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh. Tommy Everidge led off with a single and later scored on Edwin Maysonet's RBI single. After an Edwin Bellorin two-out single and a passed ball, Maysonet scored from third on a wild pitch. However, that was as close as the Express would get as Wldaimir Sutil grounded out with runners at first and second.
The Cubs got a solo homer from Marquez Smith to lead off the eighth and five runs on five hits and an Express error in the ninth. The game's final six runs all came against Casey Daigle, who made his first appearance at Round Rock after a month stay with the Astros.
Hoffpauir and Smith each had three hits with the latter scoring twice. Snyder was 2-for-4 with three RBI and two walks, and Ty Wright was 2-for-6 with two RBI.
Bellorin was 3-for-3 with a walk, and Maysonet was 2-for-4.
Round Rock and Iowa continue their four-game series Saturday with a 7:05 p.m. CDT first pitch at The Dell Diamond. Right-hander Josh Banks (8-7, 3.33 ERA) starts for the Express, while right-hander Thomas Diamond (5-4, 3.48 ERA) gets the call for the Cubs.
