First Place Jackals Strike Again

Elmira, NY- The Elmira Jackals closed out their regular season schedule picking up their 39th victory of the season tonight with a 6-5 win over the Dayton Bombers in front of 3,596 at First Arena. The Jackals were lead by a two goal performance from Chris Korchinski and a three point night from Brendan Connolly. The Jackals hold the top spot in the North Division and will watch the remainder of the North Division race to find out their position for Round One of the Kelly Cup Playoffs.

After clinching a playoff spot last evening with a 4-2 win over Reading, the Jackals used tonight's game as an opportunity to gain home ice advantage for the playoffs. The Jackals netted the first goal of the game when Chris Korchinski netted his 24th of the season at the 17:38 mark. Korchinski slid a back hander between the legs of Paul Drew, Brendan Connolly and Chaz Johnson assisted on the play. Dayton struck right back with a goal 13 seconds later, Justin Chwedoruks' 14th of the season. Britt Dougherty assisted on the equalizer. The Jackals would strike back moments later at the 18:03 mark. Wes Cunningham fired a slap shot just wide of the blocker side of Paul Drew, Pierre-Luc Faubert retrieved the rebound and sent a perfect pass to Mike Sgroi who pounded home is 12th of the season. Elmira led 2-1 after the first with a 15-4 shot advantage.

A five goal second period kept the score keepers busy. The Jackals netted the first at the 3:26 mark when Paul McIlveen skated in two on one and roofed a shot high blocker on Paul Drew for his 22nd of the season. The Bombers would strike back with three in a row. The first came at 5:24 when Nino Musitelli and Jarrett Lukin set up Andrew Fournier. Fournier struck again at the 13:41 mark with the assists going to Reaney and Auffrey. Dayton ended their second period scoring rally with a Jarrett Lukin power play tally. Greg Labenski sent a pass to the wide open Lukin who was waiting in the center slot, Lukin beat Teslak for his 22nd of the season. The Jackals would wait until 19:52 to even the score at fours. On the power play Brendan Connolly moved the puck to Paul McIlveen who sent a perfect one timer pass to Nathan Lutz. The Lutz bomb found the high glove corner for his 8th of the season. The second period closed out a 4-4 with Elmira holding a 23-17 shot advantage.

The Jackals opened the third period with two quick goals. The first came just 0:19 in when Chris Korchinski made a fancy move that beat Paul Drew for the 5-4 lead. At the 2:00 mark the Jackals netted another, Brendan Connolly's seventh of the season. Connolly fired home a shot from the high slot when he took a pass from Josh Aspenlind. Steve Yetman also assisted on the power play mark. The Bombers would fight back with a goal from Matt Auffrey his 13th of the season, the power play goal was scored at 6:14. The Jackals would hang on to the 6-5 lead with the help of the cheering fans inside of First Arena.

With the win tonight Elmira holds the top spot in the North Division with 85 points (two better than Cincinnati and Trenton) and will wait out the weekend to find out the playoff positioning. Stay tuned to www.Jackalshockey.com for an upcoming Kelly Cup Playoff schedule.
