St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN - It was sweet redemption for Chandler Shepherd on Wednesday night at CHS Field. Coming off a start six days ago he'd like to forget, Shepherd showcased the type of pitcher he's been for most of the season. He tossed 5.0 scoreless innings and the bullpen continued its domination of the Iowa Cubs as they threw 4.0 scoreless innings en route to a 2-0 shutout victory at CHS Field in front of 5,563.
Shepherd was tested in the first inning when he gave up a leadoff single to Dee Strange-Gordon. After a fielder's choice, Shepherd gave up a single to Trayce Thompson that put runners at first and second. Michael Hermosillo grounded into a fielder's choice and Shepherd got Trent Giambrone to fly out to end the inning.
In the bottom of the first, Tomás Telis provided all the offense the Saints needed on the night. He crushed a solo homer to right, his fifth of the season, to put the Saints up 1-0.
In the third, Shepherd gave up a one out double to Strange-Gordon, but struck out Nick Martini and got Thompson to fly out to right to end the inning.
In the fourth, Shepherd gave up back-to-back singles, but got Abiatal Avelino to ground into a double play and ended the inning with a lineout off the bat of Tony Wolters. Shepherd went 5.0 scoreless allowing five hits while striking out three.
The bullpen did the rest. The birthday boy, Ian Hamilton, tossed a scoreless sixth inning while walking two and striking out two.
The only batter to reach against Juan Minaya was a hit by pitch with an out in the seventh as he went 1.1 hitless, scoreless innings while striking out one.
In the bottom of the eighth the Saints got an insurance run off the bat of Daniel Descalso. With two outs, Jimmy Kerrigan singled to right and Descalso followed with an RBI double to right-center putting the Saints up by two.
Derek Law got the final five outs of the game, all on the ground, tossing a perfect 1.2 innings of relief. In all, the Saints bullpen pitched 4.0 hitless, scoreless innings of relief. They've thrown 8.1 consecutive scoreless innings and allowed just one run over their last 12.1 innings of work.
Max Kepler went 1-4 in his rehab assignment.
The same two teams meet in game three of the six-game series on Thursday night at CHS Field at 7:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Rob Whalen (0-2, 3.46) to the mound and the I-Cubs are TBA. The game can be seen on the Saints Cable Network, cable access channels in and around the Twin Cities area, and MiLB.TV and heard on KFAN Plus, 96.7 FM.
