ABOUT LAST GAME: Columbia's successful road trip continued on Tuesday night. The Fireflies defeated the Drive at Fluor Field, 7-5, and go for their first series sweep of the year on Wednesday. Columbia's offense delivered 11 more hits and the pitching staff struck out 13 more batters. Also, eight of the nine hitters in Columbia's batting order hit safely and all nine reached base safely in a dominating effort.
CAN'T HANDLE THE HEAT: Columbia's pitching staff has fanned 130 hitters through 12 games - the most in the SAL by a wide margin. The pitching staff has fanned 60 batters during the five-game road trip compared to just 11 walks (six coming in one game on Monday, April 16).
STARTER'S SUCCESS: Columbia's starting pitchers have been marvelous to begin the year (Tony Dibrell, Joe Cavallaro, Jake Simon, Anthony Kay, Chris Viall, Marcel Renteria). The starters' combined ERA is 2.89 (62.2 IP, 20 ER) through 11 games.
WE'RE GOING STREAKING: Both Blake Tiberi (2-for-5, 2B, RBI) and Jeremy Vasquez (1-for-2, 2B, 2 BB, RBI) reached base again on Tuesday. Those two hitters have reached base safely in all 11 games they've played in this season. Just as impressive, Tiberi is 3rd in SAL in batting average (.381) and Vasquez is tops in the league in walks (13).
WE'RE GOING STREAKING, Pt. II: Four Fireflies hitters are currently on hit streaks longer than five games: Rigoberto Terrazas (7), Walter Rasquin (7), Quinn Brodey (6), Edgardo Fermin (5).
THESE GUYS CAN HIT...: The Fireflies are arguably the best offense in the league. Matter of fact, Columbia is first in the South Atlantic League in batting average (.283), hits (115), triples (8) and walks (54) and second in the league in doubles (21) and runs (66).
...ESPECIALLY LATELY: 51 hits for the club during the 5-game road trip.
DID WE SAY THEY CAN HIT?: Six Fireflies hitters are batting .300 or better 12 games into the season: Blake Tiberi (.381), Scott Manea (.348), Edgardo Fermin (.326), Quinn Brodey (.310), Walter Rasquin (.310), Gio Alfonzo (.308).
