Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS,NC - In the final game of their 7-game road trip, Kannapolis (7-6) falls to Augusta 5-1, allowing 10 hits to the GreenJackets lineup in an early Wednesday game at SRP Park.
The Intimidators defense got off to a sluggish start in the bottom half of the first, as third baseman Anthony Villa committed a fielding error off the bat of Heliot Ramos, followed by a triple from Shane Matheny that scored Ramos for the first run of the game. Just one batter later, Jean Angomas grounded out to first baseman Justin Yurchak, allowing Matheny to come in and score for the GreenJackets (8-5).
In the second, Augusta added on another run off Kannapolis starter Blake Battenfield, as Ramos (1) connected on his first long ball of the season to extend the GreenJackets lead, 3-0.
With Battenfield exiting after the third inning, the Kannapolis offense had no answer for Augusta's John Gavin, who scattered five hits, while only giving up one run and striking out seven.
Kannapolis plated their only run off Gavin in the sixth, using a Tyler Frost (1) blast to right field to do so, leading to Gavin's exit with a four run lead after his offense put up another two runs in the bottom of the fifth off the I's Yelmison Peralta.
The Augusta pitching staff retired 9 out of the last 10 Kannapolis batters to take care of Justin Jirschele's group in front of a large crowd on Education Day, giving the GreenJackets the series win.
The Intimidators will travel back up I-85 to Kannapolis for a four-game homestand that starts Thursday night at 6:35 p.m. against the Greenville Drive (Boston Red Sox affiliate).
