
FireAntz Split Two Over Weekend

[FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.] â The Fayetteville FireAntz of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) had an up and down weekend where they won on Friday against the previously undefeated Jacksonville Barracudas and lost to the cellar-dwelling Winston-Salem Polar Twins on Sunday.
November 19th (Jacksonville Barracudas): In front of 4,325 people at the Crown Coliseum the FireAntz hosted the 5-0 Jacksonville Barracudas on American Pride: Military Appreciation Night the FireAntz got out to an early lead in the first period.
Bryan Lachapelle deflected a shot from the point by Stephen Margeson between the legs of goaltender Mark Brusseau to give the FireAntz a 1-0 lead 7:53 into the game. Later in the period Dean Jackson scored his 5th of the season to give the FireAntz a 2-0 1st period lead at 13:39. Fayetteville outshot Jacksonville 13-9 in the period. FireAntz lead 2-0.
In the second period it was much of the same as Dean Jackson scored his second of the game and 6th of the season on the power play. Shawn Roed got his second assist of the game on the goal. Fayetteville outshot Jacksonville 16-8 in the period. FireAntz lead 3-0.
In the third period, protecting a 3-0 advantage, the FireAntz defense and goaltending stepped to the forefront. Goaltender Chad Collins blocked 13 of 14 shots. The lone Jacksonville goal was scored by Mark Phenow at the 5:06 mark. RJ Roy capped the scoring for the FireAntz at 19:51 with an empty-netter. Jacksonville outshot Fayetteville 14-4 in the period. FireAntz win 4-1.
The win pulled the FireAntz within 2 points of 1st place Jacksonville and the Barracudas loss was the first of the season after winning their first 5 games, all on the road.
November 21st (Winston-Salem Polar Twins): In a penalty-filled first period, the FireAntz allowed the first goal of the game on home-ice since October 30th. At the 11:31 mark Frank Burgio scored to give the Polar Twins a 1-0 lead. They answered with another goal before the first period would end, this time on the power play by Graham Dearle at 18:19. There were 31 penaly minutes combined in the first period on 11 penalties. Fayetteville oushot Winston-Salem 14-10. Polar-Twins lead 2-0.
In the second period Fayetteville would fire back as they got the next two goals of the game in a 27 second span. Dean Jackson tallied first, his 7th of the season, at the 4:50 mark. Sean Edwards followed shortly after that at the 5:17 mark with his first of the year to tie the game at 2. Winston-Salem quickly ended the FireAntz momentum with a goal by Cam Worfelman at 7:08 to give the edge back to the Polar-Twins 3-2. Fayetteville's Jackson would answer back, however, netting his 2nd of the game and 8th of the season at 14:45. Both teams had only 9 shots in the 2nd period. Score tied at 3.
In a period that was dominated, shot-wise, by the FireAntz there would be only 1 goal. It would come off the stick of Trevor Karasiewicz of the Polar Twins at 7:16. That goal gave the Polar Twins a 4-3 lead. With just over four minutes to play, it appeared that the FireAntz had scored the tying goal only to have it quickly nullified by referee Jason Rollins due to the puck being hit with a high-stick. The Polar Twins put the clamps down after that and held on for the 4-3 win. Fayetteville outshot Winston-Salem 18-4. Polar Twins win 4-3.
