Winston-Salem Polar Twins News Release
The Winston-Salem Polar Twins added a win and a loss to their current record this past weekend, dropping one to the Aces in Asheville 4-2 and then defeating the FireAntz 4-3 in Fayetteville.
Friday night, the Polar Twins took to the ice at the Asheville Civic Center for the first time in franchise history. Asheville stormed out to a 4-0 lead getting a goal each from Peter Cermak and Chris Affinati, and two goals from Dan Pszensczny. Shaun Aebig began a rally for Winston-Salem in the second, batting home a rebound past Aces goaltender Mark Scally for a 4-1 score. The goal was Aebig's third of the season and came at the 14:19 mark. Graham Dearle made it 4-2 just under five minutes later, wristing a shot low to Scally's stick side from the left wing face-off circle, and giving the Polar Twins the momentum heading into the third period. Richard Gustafsson brought the Polar Twins within one at 4-3, but Asheville's Janis Tomans capitalized on a mistake off the boards to give the Aces the 5-3 victory.
On Saturday the Polar Twins headed to the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville for a game against their cross-state rivals, the Fayetteville FireAntz. Frank Burgio got things rolling for the Polar Twins in the first period with his first goal of the season. Graham Dearle made it 2-0 with less than two minutes remaining in the first, netting his second goal in as many games. The FireAntz fought back in the second with two goals in a span of 27 seconds to tie the game at 2-2. The two teams traded goals later in the period, with Cam Werfelman scoring his first goal as a member of the Polar Twins, for a 3-3 game. Trevor Karasiewicz tallied the game-winner at the 7:16 mark of the third period to give the Polar Twins a 4-3 victory.
