Winston-Salem Polar Twins News Release

[WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.] – Trevor Karasiewicz had four goals and two assists and Shaun Aebig added two goals and three assists to lead the Winston-Salem Polar Twins over the Asheville Aces 10-6 Saturday night at LJVM Annex. Rick Nichol got the win in net for the Polar Twins, stopping 30 of 36 shots he faced. The Twins finish their inaugural season with a 14-42 record.

The story of the night was the line of Karasiewicz, Aebig, and Steve Lajoie, which combined for 14 points (7 goals, 7 assists). It was also the highest output of goals by the Polar Twins this season.

Karasiewicz put the Polar Twins on the board only 1 minute, 20 seconds into the game with an unassisted goal, his 14th of the season. Through traffic, Karasiewicz beat Asheville netminder Mark Scally for the 1-0 lead.

Jarno Mensonen tied things up only 1:10 later with his seventh goal. Nobumasa Kinugasa won the battle in the corner and fed Mensonen who was wide open in the slot for a 1-1 score.

The see saw battle continued with Karasiewicz’s second goal of the night – 15th of the season – to make it 2-1 Winston-Salem. The rebound of a Billy Rochefort shot came out to Lajoie at the blue line. Lajoie connected withAebig in the slot. Aebig redirected the puck to Karasiewicz who lifted the puck over a sprawling Scally for the lead.

Again Asheville came back to tie it, this time on a one-timer by Josh Fey. MensonenÂ’s cross-ice pass was right on the tape of FeyÂ’s stick, giving Fey a shot at an open net that tied the game 2-2.

KarasiewiczÂ’s third goal of the night put Winston-Salem ahead 3-2. The lead pass was too far for Karasiewicz who entered the Aces zone ahead of the Asheville defender. Scally came out for the clearing attempt, which was blocked by Karasiewicz who wristed a quick shot into the open net for the natural hat trick, his first three-goal game of the season.

Aebig made it 4-2 in favor of Winston-Salem with just over a minute remaining in the opening frame. Shawn BreakerÂ’s shot from the point deflected off of AebigÂ’s stick and over the glove hand of Scally for his team-leading 26th goal of the season.

Asheville started the second period strong, scoring only 47 seconds in to make it a one-goal game at 4-3. Rick Nichol could not get a handle on the loose puck, which Eldon Cheechoo flipped into the net for his sixth goal of the season.

Chris Affinati regained the two-goal cushion for the Twins at the 2:41 mark, tallying his sixth goal of the season for a 5-3 game. Affinati made his way behind the Asheville defense and slid the puck through the pads of Jorge Alves, who replaced Scally at the beginning of the second period.

Asheville fought hard, scoring two straight to tie the game 5-5. FeyÂ’s second goal of the game made it 5-4 Winston-Salem at the 3:42 mark. Dan Psyyenyczny then tied it at the 12:48 mark, tallying his seventh goal of the season.

LajoieÂ’s 14th goal of the season put the Twins on top once again at 6-5 at 14:07 of the middle frame. Karasiewicz skated into the Aces zone and went to the right side of the net, making it look like he was going to attempt a wrap around shot. Then, at the last second, he dropped a pass to Lajoie for the easy goal and a Polar Twins lead heading into the third.

Karasiewicz kept pouring it on in the third period, burying his fourth goal of the game on a one-timer from Marcus Willy for the 7-5 Polar Twins lead.

AffinatiÂ’s second goal of the game made it 8-5 Winston-Salem but the battle would not end there. Asheville came back only 1:01 later on CheechooÂ’s second of the game making it an 8-6. Trevor Jobe and Aebig added a goal each late in the third for the 10-6 final.

Nichol played a strong game in net, making several key saves, including one on a breakaway in the third, to preserve the win for Winston-Salem.
