St. Lucie Mets News Release
KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Florida Fire Frogs scored three runs in the second inning and went on to beat the St. Lucie Mets 4-2 on Thursday at Osceola County Stadium.
It was the first loss for the Mets (3-1) in the second half and it snapped a four-game winning streak.
The game entered the bottom of the second in a 1-1 tie. The Fire Frogs offense went to work against Mets starter Kevin Smith, scoring three runs on four hits. Jordan Rodgers and Andrew Moritz hit back-to-back RBI singles to put the Frogs up 3-1. Riley Delgado capped the inning with a RBI double to make it 4-1.
Smith settled down and retired the next eight in a row. He ended up facing the minimum amount of batters over his final four innings.
Smith tied his season high with nine strikeouts. He only walked one batter. He gave up four runs on six hits.
The Mets offense couldn't get much going against four Florida pitchers. Carlos Cortes hit two doubles and Jeremy Vasquez drove Cortes home with singles both times. The first occurrence came in the first inning to give the Mets a 1-0 advantage.
Florida's Trey Harris tied the game in the home first inning with a solo home run.
Vasquez knocked a RBI single in the sixth inning to make it 4-2. However, Vasquez was thrown out on the play trying to scamper back to first base. It was a tough blow for the Mets, as Cody Bohanek immediately followed with a double. Bohanek was later stranded and the Fire Frogs maintained their two-run lead.
Fire Frogs starting pitcher Matt Withrow departed the game with a right leg injury after just 2.1 innings. Troy Bacon came out of the bullpen and fired 2.2 scoreless and hitless innings to get the win.
Walter Borkovich scattered four hits but only surrendered one run in two innings.
Kurt Hoekstra did not allow a hit or a run in the final two innings to get his third save.
Jacob Rhame and Joe Cavallaro each pitched a scoreless inning for the Mets.
The Mets (3-1, 35-35) and Fire Frogs (2-2, 27-43) play the second game of their series at Osceola County Stadium on Friday. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
