Swift Current Broncos News Release
Moose Jaw, Sask. - The Swift Current Broncos earned a big 7-2 win on the road on Friday night in Game One of their second round series against the Moose Jaw Warriors.
With a large contingent of Broncos fans making their presence known, the Broncos used the energy to take a 4-0 lead by the time 33 minutes had elapsed in the hockey game thanks to a pair of goals each by Brady Birnie and Josh Filmon. The first of which came within 38 seconds apart in the first period, while the next two came basically four-and-a-half minutes apart in the second period.
The Warriors would battle back though, scoring twice with under a minute-and-a-half left to play in the second period as Brayden Yager and Jagger Firkus got the Warriors on the board, but it's as close as Moose Jaw would get.
"We were just able to kind of refocus, reset, and we've done a good job with that all year of staying pretty composed and just treating it like a 0-0 game," said Broncos Interim Head Coach Taras McEwen. "And I thought we did a real good job with that."
Connor Hvidston, Mathew Ward, and Ty Coupland added insurance in the third period for the Broncos who were outshot in the game 35-32. However, Reid Dyck was excellent in net, stopping 33 shots for his fifth win of the playoffs.
McEwen added that it was a big night for the depth on his roster.
"I think we had just good contributions from every line at some point during the game," he said.
The Broncos were 1-for-2 on the powerplay and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill in the game.
Game Two of the series goes on Saturday back in Moose Jaw. Game time is 7 p.m. and you can catch all the action on WHL Live or on Country 94.1.
