First Blood

Tyson Jugnauth and Kyle Chyzowski led the way with two goals apiece as the Winterhawks picked up a huge Game 1 win, knocking off the Silvertips 8-2 on Friday night. With multiple goals in each period and a steady showing from Jan Špunar between the pipes, it was the kind of 60-minute effort the Hawks can lean on going forward. Portland's special teams play was particularly stout, with three power-play goals on five opportunities and an impressive seven penalty kills on 8 chances.

"Special teams are huge in playoffs. It's gonna flip momentum easily," said forward Kyle Chyzowski. "I thought our power play got big goals in the second to extend the lead. The penalty kill was great that first period, we got hit with a lot of tests, and we found a way to kill them, I think that brought momentum onto our side."

Scoring In Bunches

The Hawks have made a habit of having multi-goal scorers in the postseason, with at least one Winterhawk hitting two or more goals in every game thus far. Additionally, every skater who has played in multiple games has at least one point, including netminder Jan Špunar. That balanced production is key to Portland's success as the team relies on its depth to overwhelm and wear down more top-heavy opponents. Last night saw all four lines score a goal as 13 different Portland players found the scoresheet in what might as well have been a blueprint for how Mike Johnston wants his team to play.

With offensive confidence flowing throughout the lineup and a sense of urgency needed to bag a second win before the series shifts to Everett for as many as three straight games, expect more of the same consistent four-lines-deep attack from the home club tonight.

Keep It Cool

One area the Winterhawks will be keen to clean up a bit is its discipline. After seeing his club take eight penalties on Friday, Winterhawks GM/Head Coach Mike Johnston lamented his team's parade to the penalty box despite the result in Game 1. Portland's veteran group will surely key in on those elements in tonight's rematch, particularly as Everett looks to turn the tide with its own power play.
