Fightins swept in final meeting with New Britain

The Reading Fightin Phils (72-54) were swept on Sunday by the New Britain Rock Cats (60-65) for the first time since 2011 as they lost 7-5. This game was the final time the Fightin Phils would ever play New Britain as the franchise moves to Hartford next season.

The Rock Cats got after Joely Rodriguez (5-3) in the top of the second inning with two outs. Rodriguez walked Will Swanner and Joey Wong then gave up a two-run single to Matt Flemer (7-9) as the Rock Cats took a 2-0 lead. Brodie Greene hit a two-out RBI double off Flemer in the bottom of the second inning that scored Harold Martinez and cut the Rock Cats lead in half 2-1.

Mike Tauchman hit a RBI single off Rodriguez in the top of the fifth inning that gave New Britain a 3-1 lead. Jordan Patterson hit a three-run home run off Rodriguez that gave the Rock Cats a 6-1 lead. Rodriguez got Jan Vasquez to groundout to shortstop before leaving the game with two outs in the inning. Reinier Roibal entered the game and struck out Will Swanner to end the inning.

The Rock Cats scored a run off Roibal in the top of the sixth inning as Joey Wong scored on an error. New Britain would lead 7-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. Andrew Knapp homered off Flemer with one out to cut the Rock Cats lead to 7-2. Brock Stassi would score on a bases-loaded walk by Brodie Greene that gave Reading a 7-3 lead.

Jimmy Cordero came into the game in the top of the seventh inning. Destin Hood put the Fightin Phils closer in the bottom of the seventh inning as he hit a two-out, two-run double off Kraig Sitten that saw New Britain's lead drop to 7-5. Cordero tossed two scoreless innings. Edubray Ramos entered the game in the top of the ninth inning. He retired the side.

Brock Stassi extended his hitting streak to seven games with a double in the bottom of the seventh inning. Reading was swept for the first time since June 12 through the 14th vs. Akron. Matt Flemer took the win as Joely Rodriguez earned the loss. Carlos Estevez retired the side for his ninth save of the season.

The Fightin Phils play the Altoona Curve at People's Natural Gas Field on Monday night. First pitch is at 7:00 pm. Fans can listen to the game on CBS Sports Radio 1240 AM/98-5 FM and fightins.com beginning at 6:30 pm.
