New Hampshire Fisher Cats News Release
MANCHESTER, N.H. - Taylor Cole pitched into the ninth inning to earn his sixth win of the season as the Fisher Cats beat the Binghamton Mets, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon. The victory earned a split of the four-game series, leaving them 6.5 games behind second-place Binghamton heading into the final 15 days of the regular season.
Cole began the game in perfect fashion, retiring the first seven men he faced before a one-out single in the third. A walk put two runners on in the inning, but Cole escaped the jam unscathed.
In the fourth and seventh innings, the Mets picked up their next two hits, but each was followed by a 6-4-3 double play to end those threats.
In the eighth, with a light rain falling, Cole gave up another lead-off single, but a third double play erased Joe Benson. Two more Mets reached in the inning, but with men at the corners Cole struck out LJ Mazzilli to end the frame.
Cole returned for the ninth, but immediately allowed a single to TJ Rivera. Josh Rodriguez followed with a two-run homer to end Cole's day. The righty gave up two runs over eight-plus innings, striking out six while allowing just one walk.
Danny Barnes (S; 4) relieved him in the ninth, giving up a run of his own before eventually securing his fourth save of the season.
Offensively, the Fisher Cats (61-63) produced just their second ten-hit game in August. Four players - Jorge Flores, Shane Opitz, Derrick Chung, and Dwight Smith, Jr. - each collected two hits on the afternoon.
Smith, Jr. started the scoring by doubling home Flores in the third inning. Roemon Fields made it 2-0 with an RBI groundout to plate Opitz in the fifth.
A two-run sixth inning pushed the lead to 4-0. Chung singled with one out before Emilio Guerrero brought him home with a double to left field. Opitz followed with a triple to score Guerrero and knock Binghamton starter Matt Koch (L; 4-8) out of the game.
Chung's solid day capped off a busy, successful series. The catcher tallied four hits in three games while driving in five runs.
The Fisher Cats now hit the road for a seven-game trip that will take them first to Portland on Monday night. First pitch is at 7 p.m. with Conner Greene set to make his third Double-A start. Ben Gellman has the radio call beginning at 6:45 p.m. on the WGIR Fisher Cats Radio Network and www.nhfishercats.com.
The Fisher Cats return home for the final homestand of 2015 on Monday, Aug. 31. The Future Red Sox, the Portland Sea Dogs will be in town with two Atlas Fireworks shows, free t-shirts and posters, and a retirement ceremony for the No. 29 in honor of New Hampshire legend Chris Carpenter. Tickets are available at www.nhfishercats.com, by calling (603) 641-2005, or by visiting the team box office at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.
