Fightin Phils Shut out on Saturday Night

(Richmond, VA) - The Reading Fightin Phils (16-22) were shut out for the third time this season, in a 2-0 loss to the Richmond Flying Squirrels (17-21) on Saturday night from The Diamond. With the loss, the Fightin Phils have lost the first five games of this week's series against the Flying Squirrels.

Richmond struck first in the bottom of the second frame. It came on a solo home run from Grant McCray to right field to make it 1-0. The Flying Squirrels then tacked on their second, and final, run of the night in the bottom of the third. Jairo Pomares led off the inning with a triple and came around to score on a one-out to first base by Luis Toribio.

That's all Richmond needed as Carson Ragsdale (W, 1-1) shined over five innings. Ragsdale allowed three hits and no runs while striking out nine and walking zero hitters. Evan Gates followed with two scoreless frames, and Eric Silva (S, 1) earned his first save of the season with two shutout innings and two strikeouts.

On the Reading side, Robinson Pina's (L, 4-2) stretch of four-straight starts with a win came to an end, as he allowed two runs over four innings, with four strikeouts. Carlos Francisco threw two shutout innings, and then Tristan Garnett and Tyler McKay both tossed scoreless frames, as well.

With Saturday's loss, Reading has now lost nine straight games at Richmond, with the last win coming on July 10, 2022. If Reading loses tomorrow, it will mark the first time the Fightin Phils are swept in a six-game series since July 13-18, 2021, at home against Portland. It would mark the thrid time Reading would be swept in a six-game series, since the schedule shifted to six-game series in 2021.

The Fightin Phils and Flying Squirrels return to the field Sunday at 1:35 p.m. for game six of this week's series. RHP Konnor Ash will start for Reading, opposite RHP Matt Frisbee for Richmond. A video stream is available via MiLB TV or the Bally Live App.

Reading returns home from Tuesday, May 21 through Sunday, May 26, for a six-game series against the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (Mets).
