Kansas City Monarchs News Release
ZION, Ill. - The Lake County Fielders (26-34) scored 10 times over the final three innings to erase a 9-1 deficit as they took the game and the series from the Kansas City T-Bones (39-23), 11-10, Thursday night in Zion, IL. It is the first series loss by Kansas City since they dropped three of four in Joliet from June 24-27.
Kansas City scored six times over the first two innings against former T-Bone Matt Schweitzer, plating the first two in the first inning on RBI singles by Jim Fasano and Brian Joynt. The single by Fasano extended his current hit streak to 19 games, the highest by a T-Bone this season.
A four-run second chased Schweitzer from the game and pushed the score to 6-0. Dwayne White, who singled and came home on Fasano's basehit in the first, capped off the scoring in the second with a two-run single. Schweitzer left with two outs in the inning having allowed six runs, five earned, on six hits.
Lake County picked up their first run of the game against Andrew Cruse in the third inning on an RBI single by Joshua Short. Kansas City then used a solo home run by Keanon Simon in the sixth and a two-run shot by Fasano in the seventh to gain a 9-1 advantage. The blasts were the only blemishes from Fielders reliever Alec Lewis who allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits over five and one-thirds innings of relief for Lake County.
The Fielders began their comeback in the seventh, scoring five times on four hits and an error to pull within three, 9-6. Amos Ramon drove in the first two runs with a double and scored on a two-bagger from the next hitter, Short. Brian McFall then reached safely on an error that allowed Short to score and chased Cruse from the contest. Hunter Mense entered and surrendered an RBI double to Jeff Dunbar before inducing a strike to end the inning.
Cruse was charged with six runs, four earned, on 10 hits over six and two-thirds innings. Neither starter factored into the decision.
After Jacob Blackwood pushed the score to 10-6 with a leadoff home run in the top of the eighth, Lake County tied the game at 10 with four runs on three hits and an error in their half of the inning. Erik Hamren (0-1) took over for Kansas City to begin the frame and surrendered a double and a walk to his first two batters. Following a strikeout, Juan Valdez doubled home two runs before moving to third on a single from Ramon. An error two batters later allowed both runners to score and brought the teams back to even.
Chad Lundahl (1-0) threw a scoreless top of the ninth for the Fielders to earn his first win of the season. Hamren remained in the game for Kansas City and surrendered a walk and a single to the first two batters in the bottom of the ninth before another T-Bones error loaded the bases with nobody out. After a strikeout to Guillermo Martinez, Valdez ended the contest with a sacrifice fly to left, giving the Fielders an 11-10 victory.
Hamren surrendered five runs, two earned, on four hits over one and two-thirds innings in his first loss of the season.
Kansas City now prepares for a three-game series against the Rockford RiverHawks in their first trip to Road Ranger Stadium. Left-hander Reid Santos (4-3, 4.72) will start game one for the T-Bones opposite right-hander Kyle Wright (5-2, 3.80) and Rockford. First pitch is set for 7:05.
