Rockford RiverHawks News Release
LOVES PARK, Ill. - Longtime RiverHawks nemesis Wes Long again played a pivotal role as the Winnipeg Goldeyes beat Rockford, 8-3, on Thursday at Road Ranger Stadium.
Long was 1-for-5 with a ninth-inning grand slam and a couple of other helpful at-bats for the Winnipeg offense. Kevin House hit a three-run homer to account for the Rockford offense, in front of a sellout crowd of 3,482.
Rockford dropped three games behind Winnipeg and Gary for the fourth and final Northern League playoff spot. Gary beat Joliet, 6-1.
Winnipeg led from the first inning on. In the first, Long hit a fly that right fielder Ian Church dropped for a run-scoring error. In the third inning, after singles by Brett Wallace and Price Kendall, Long moved the runners up with a grounder to second base. Juan Diaz singled them in with two outs and scored on a single by Luis Alen.
House hit his sixth home run of the year, a fly to left, in the bottom of the third to pull Rockford within a run.
In the ninth, Long put the game away with his seventh home run, a grand slam to center field. Long has hit eight career home runs and has a .336 average against the RiverHawks. He spent 2007-08 with two-time Frontier League champion Windy City. Rockford switched leagues after 2009.
Chris Salamida (8-4) lasted five-plus innings for the win. Rockford starter Roger Lincoln (4-6) gave up eight hits in six innings and took the loss. Former Minnesota Twin Bobby Korecky pitched two scoreless innings for his seventh save.
