RailCats Take 6-1 Decision Over JackHammers

JOLIET, IL - Three first inning runs proved to be enough Thursday night as the Gary SouthShore RailCats captured a 6-1 decision over the Joliet JackHammers (33-29) at Silver Cross Field. The JackHammers dropped to 2-2 this season against the RailCats with ten games remaining between the two clubs.

The first five hitters reached base against Rory Shortell (2-5) with three runs scoring. Adam Klein and Mike Massaro singled and scored on a two run single by Jay Pecci. After a Cristian Guerrero walk, Randall Simon singled home the third run before Shortell settled down and retired the side without allowing another run.

Gary added solo runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings to push the lead to 6-0. Louis Ott knocked home a run in the third with a single. Tanner Townsend scored on a Michael Rocco balk in the fifth and Klein scored on a dropped ball at home by Joe Billick on a base hit by Massaro in the sixth.

Nolan Nicholson (4-2) shut down the JackHammers, allowing only one hit in five innings. The right-hander struck out four and walked four in the victory.

The JackHammers picked up their lone tally in the ninth off Andy Shipman. Chris Colton led off with an infield single and scored on a Roberto Mena double for the 6-1 final.

Shortell (2-5) lasted 4.2 innings, surrendering five runs on 12 hits with four strikeouts and one walk. The bullpen allowed only one unearned run over the final 4.1 frames.

Kevin Rios collected two of the five JackHammer hits with Mena picking up the lone run batted in.

The JackHammers and RailCats continue their four game set tomorrow night at Silver Cross Field. Devin Anderson (3-2) will take the bump opposite Brad Halsey (3-5). Game time is set for 7:10 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. pre-game show on 1340 WJOL.
